This celebration of Israel's Independence Day is free and open to the public
Israel is turning 65 this year and the Jewish Federation of Cleveland has teamed with more than 50 local Jewish organizations to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day, this evening at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven in Mayfield Height. The annual celebration is a family-friendly event for all ages. It is also free and open to the public. The fun and festivities kick off at 6 p.m. Young children can enjoy arts and crafts, balloon artists, face-painting and photo opportunities while learning about Israeli life and culture. The Federation will reward the best entries regarding the Warsaw ghetto uprising
The Jewish Federation of Cleveland will offer a total of $2,500 to winning entries in its 2013 creative arts contest for middle school and high school students. All students in grades 6-12 in Northeast Ohio schools are invited to submit creative writing and visual arts entries. This year's theme is the "Warsaw Ghetto Uprising." Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, when Jewish resistance fighters held off German oppression for a month. Participating students are asked to use this uprising or others as inspiration in their projects. The Federation suggests writing or designing from the point of view of a fighter, inhabitant or somebody on the outside looking in as a few examples. The deadline for submissions is…

The Jewish Family Service Association's at-risk teen group will meet other kids in sister city Beit Shean, volunteer for eight days
The Jewish Family Service Association’s YouthAbility kids are in Israel to meet other kids and volunteer for eight days. YouthAbility supports youth with disabilities or who are at risk to develop job skills through programs and activities like Cleveland CROPS. The group left Sunday for the trip. They will visit Jewish Cleveland’s sister city Beit Shean and meet with developmentally challenged students they have video conferenced with, part of an effort to create lasting relationships with people from this city. The group will also visit Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Their volunteer work includes harvesting produce for people in need and preparing meals at a soup kitchen.

More numbers crunched from Jewish Population Study
There is a higher rate of poverty in the Cleveland Jewish community than in other cities that have gathered this population data, like Chicago and Baltimore, said Erika Rudin-Luria during a breakfast presentation to Jewish community leaders Tuesday. The Jewish Federation of Cleveland contracted Jewish Policy and Action Research (JPAR), a professional survey services company, to phone people in all of Cuyahoga and parts of Portage, Geauga, Lake, Summit and Lorain Counties. Rudin-Luria is the vice president of community development at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and part of the team that has worked closely on the study. Volunteers help take pledges in Sunday drive
More than 600 volunteers helped raise over $700,000 for the Jewish Federation of Cleveland from over 2,000 donors at Sunday's phone-a-thon. The pledges surpassed last year's, and go to support the Federation's 15 outreach organizations for those in need in Cleveland and around world. The phone-a-thon serves as the rally for the Federation's annual fundraising campaign, which runs through May. Jewish Federation gives to people in 52 group homes
Over 75 volunteers participated in Chanukah in a Basket at the Jewish Federation Wednesday. Donated movies, books, gloves, scarves and other gifts were wrapped and sorted at the Federation's Mandel Building in Beachwood. The gifts will be delivered to 52 Federation group homes in time for Chanukah. To volunteer for the Jewish Federation's many holiday and other charity projects, visit their website.

Grants to promote health of minority women in Israel
The Jewish Federation of Cleveland has teamed up with Healing Across the Divides to award $900,000 in grants to women’s health care groups in Israel. The Collaborative for Healthy Women aims to improve health care for underserved Israeli women. The collaborative will fund five community-based projects this year. The grants are awarded for a three-year period with annual renewal requirements. Annual fundraiser supports Federation's 14 partner agencies, including Montefiore, Agnon and the JFSA
The Jewish Federation of Cleveland raised nearly $28 million in its annual fundraiser. Donations came from 11,000 donors and the average donation was 5 percent larger than last year, the Federation notes in a press release.
