Beachwood High Football Coach Has Eye on State Championship

Mike Gibbons has been going to football games since he could walk.

OhioVarsity.com sat down with Mike Gibbons and asked him about his football background and the year ahead.  Gibbons will replace Coach Ryan Williams, who resigned in December. He will also work as a physical education teacher at the high school. more details on Gibbons here.

State Champion Ryan Harris Honored By Ohio Legislature

The Beachwood junior and Division III 160-pound state championship was honored by both the Ohio House and Senate

Division III 160-pound state champ Ryan Harris was honored for his victory earlier this month by the Ohio House and Senate. The Beachwood junior told BeachwoodBison.org that it was a great experience to speak before both houses of the state legislature. “The night before I watched someone get recognized from the year before for track,” he told the web site. “It was kind of nerve-wracking, I didn’t know what they were going to think, but once I started talking it was fun. It was kind of weird, all the people in suits and ties looking at you. I wear a suit and tie like once a year.” Harris and his fellow Bison wrestler Sammy Gross have also earned the right to represent the United States in this summer’s Maccabiah Games in Israel. The …

Beachwood's Sammy Gross Honored As Sid Luckman Jewish Scholar Athlete of the Year

Beachwood junior wrestler Gross received the award during the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum’s annual induction ceremony.

Beachwood junior wrestler Sammy Gross has already racked up some impressive accolades in his career. He is a 3-time state placer and the 2011 Division III 113-pound state champion. With a 137-12 career record at Beachwood, he is on pace to break the Bison record for most wins in a wrestling career. And, now, he's been honored by the hall of fame. The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum named Gross its Sid Luckman Jewish Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. Gross was recognized during the induction ceremony on April 21 at the Hall of Fame in Commack, New York. Beachwood Culinary Students Bake Up A Winner

Summer Kolt and Ryan dela Vega placed second and third, respectively, during a statewide pastry cakes contest

Beachwood High culinary arts students Summer Kolt and Ryan dela Vega placed second and third, respectively, during the statewide pastry cakes finals at the Ohio Family Career and Community Leaders of America. The competition was held last week at the Ohio State University in Columbus. According to Beachwood Schools, Kolt won a $4,000 renewable college scholarship and dela Vega won a $2,000 renewable scholarship. They study Beachwood's Culinary Arts program, which is part of the Mayfield Excel TECC program that provides work, tech and college preparatory opportunities. Tom Fowler Named Beachwood Girls' Soccer Coach

Fowler is a three-time Lake Erie League Coach of the Year and was named Plain Dealer Coach of the Year in 2008

Beachwood Schools has hired a program builder to be its new high school girls soccer coach. Former Shaker Heights head coach Tom Fowler will replace Art Skupniewicz, who resigned following the 2012 season, according to BeachwoodBison.org. Fowler took over as head coach at Shaker Heights in 2004 and in 2008 he led them to the state Final Four. Mike Gibbons Named Beachwood's New Head Football Coach

As a player, Gibbons won a state championship with Lake Catholic and two national championships with Mount Union

After more than 50 applicants and almost 40 people interviewed, Beachwood High School has chosen its new head football coach -- former Lake Catholic High School standout, Mount Union All-American and Brunswick defensive coordinator Mike Gibbons. “Mike is a tremendous hire for Beachwood,” Beachwood district athletic director Ryan Peters told BeachwoodBison.org. “One of things that makes me so excited about Mike is the kids will love him. They will be happy to be around him. I think what will end up happening is these kids will play very, very hard for him. I think he’ll connect with these kids really, really quickly. Beachwood Bison Tennis Team Still Unbeaten

The Bison rose to 7-0 after beating Chardon 5-0 earlier this week

The Beachwood High School tennis team blanked Chardon 5-0 on Wednesday. The Bison have started their season 7-0. “We played well,” Beachwood tennis coach David Cole told BeachwoodBison.org. “I kind of talked to the kids before the match about what lies ahead, which is Chagrin Falls and Hawken, both league matches, the Rocky River Invitational on Saturday and on Monday our first state team match.
