Beachwood Girls Overpowered by Gilmour Academy 65-49

Lancer post players dominate game; Lady Bison set season record at 19-5

The Beachwood Lady Bison lost in the semifinals of the Northeast District Div. III tournament after top-seeded Gilmour Academy knocked them out 65-49 in a tense matchup Thursday night. Gilmour earned their victory over Beachwood on the court, though a remark made by Beachwood fans seconds into the second quarter drew a threat from the official to forfeit the Bison. Fortunately, the fans complied with their ejection, but the Lancers overpowered Beachwood with their standout six-footers — senior Brittany Layton and freshman Jessica Janota — combining for 48 points. “In the end Gilmour was a bigger, stronger more disciplined team,” Beachwood head coach Melvin Burke said. “What happened [with the officiating] didn’t take away from their …

Congrats to the lady bisons for their great season! I attended all of the games that semi final day and the incident mentioned here was poorly handled. The game prior people were jumping and screaming profanities at the referees for calls but there were no penalties or delay of game . "Calm down" resulted in a technical foul on the crowd and forfeiture threats and a referee arguing with a crowd. …   more ›

Beachwood Girls' Basketball Rolls Over Cardinal

Coach Burke looks forward to matchup with Wickliffe

The Beachwood girls’ basketball team ran Middlefield Cardinal off the court in the first half of their opening-round game in the Division III District Tournament. The second half? Well, not so much. Lady Bison coach Melvin Burke wasn’t stressed about his team posting a mere 19 points in the second half after posting 45 in the first. After all, it added up to a 64-27 victory Wednesday night, good enough to beat the Huskies and good enough to face Wickliffe in the quarterfinals Saturday. Coach Burke didn’t want to give away too much to the Wickliffe scouts seated nearby or embarrass the school’s Chagrin Valley Conference cross-division rivals who posted one victory on the season. It was a tough balance, but Burke thought his team juggled it …

OHSAA Appeal Denied

Two Beachwood girls' basketball players will not play for one year

The Ohio High School Athletic Association on Thursday upheld the ruling that keeps two Beachwood High School girls’ basketball players out of play for one year. The two girls’ families appealed a ruling made Jan. 31 that paperwork submitted to the OHSAA had false statements about the girls’ residency. Tim Stried, spokesperson for the OHSAA, said today that the girls and their mothers moved to a residence in Beachwood and transferred to Beachwood High School from another school. Since their fathers did not move with them – and their parents are not legally divorced or separated – they did not meet the requirements to play this year. The OHSAA does not allow students to play sports for one year after a transfer unless they meet one of 12 …

Lady Bison Enjoy Big Win Over Independence

Beachwood wins 60-30 against CVC foes

When the Beachwood’s Kyndal Wilson started dancing to Wiz Khalifa’s Black and Yellow at the start of the fourth quarter, it didn’t  take a rocket scientist to figure out that Tuesday night’s girls’ basketball game had been going really well for the Lady Bison. And if Khalifa’s hit song didn’t make it plain enough, then Queen’s classic We Are the Champions, certainly did, blaring loud and proud with a minute remaining in the game, no less. All this was not likely intended to show up visiting Independence. Nonetheless, no amount of proper etiquette for the fallen could hide the 60-30 drubbing their Chagrin Valley Conference foes put on them Tuesday night. And why shouldn’t the Lady Bison be happy? After years of being on the wrong end of …

Beachwood Parents Intend to Appeal OHSAA Ruling

Two girls' basketball players ruled ineligible for one year; hearing to be held Thursday

The parents of two Beachwood High School girls basketball players who were suspended from participation by the OHSAA Monday are expected to appeal the decision. Tim Stried, spokesperson for the Ohio High School Athletic Association, said Friday that the families have told the OHSAA they intended to appeal the ruling that the two girls are ineligible to play until next Jan. 31. The appeals board is expected to review the cases next Thursday and announce their decisions by Friday. Stried said that in this case, the ineligibility ruling was due to inaccurate statements from the students’ change of residency forms submitted to the OHSAA. He added that representatives from Beachwood High School contacted the OHSAA after they were made aware of …

Beachwood Girls Ease Past Newbury

Senior guard Bogard scores 1,000th career point in 80-30 win

The Beachwood Lady Bison (10-3) jumped out to a 27-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they buried Newbury (3-8) 80-30 Thursday night. The win was a milestone for senior Amber Bogard: She scored her 1,000th career point 4:27 into the game off of a 3-pointer. Once the shot went down, play stopped so she could be recognized in front of her home crowd. “It was hard earned,” Head Coach Melvin Burke said. “When she was a freshman, all she was allowed to do was rebound. As she grew as a player, we gave her more duties and she’s the total package now.” Bogard finished the game with 21 points and six rebounds. She wasn’t the only one with a big night; sophomore Mercedes Hudson had a double double with 11 points and 15 …
