Beachwood High School girls basketball team ends season with 23-3 record; sets sights on 2014 state title.
The Beachwood High School Lady Bison basketball team had come off from a tough year when new head coach Mike Coreno started practices last fall. Many of the juniors on the team were freshmen when the school performed its best season ever in 2010-2011 under Melvin Burke, ending with a 19-5 record and advancing to the district semifinals for the first time in school history. The 2011-2012 season saw a new coach and an 8-12 record, and then Coreno was handed the whistle to a group of talented athletes who’d seen little consistency in their high school careers. “The first couple months were crucial,” said Coreno, the team…

Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org Beachwood’s competitive cheerleading squad added an exclamation point to the school’s most successful winter sports season in school history. The squad, competing this season for the first time in 12 years, placed fourth at Sunday’s Cheer Champion Central Hard Rockin’ Cheer and Dance Championships in Cleveland. “The girls were a little disappointed,” said cheer coach Colleen Schachtel. “I told the girls, ‘You’re at nationals. We’ve never done this before.’ They have to hold their heads up and take this all in. This was tough. It was a big moment.” The squad’s run to nationals contributed to a strong showing by the Bison winter sports teams. Beachwood’s boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both qualified for the…
