Beachwood's Gross, Harris Advance to State Quarterfinals

Both wrestlers' can place in the state today

Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org: COLUMBUS—Two of Beachwood’s three state qualifiers advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals round of the 76th annual Ohio High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament at The Jerome Schottenstein Center. Juniors Sammy Gross and Ryan Harris each dominated their first round opponents and need just one more win to place at state for the third season in a row. Gross, the defending Division III 113-pound state champion, pinned Amanda-Clearcreek’s Billy Shannon in 58 seconds at 120 and Harris, third last season and seventh as a freshman, recorded a 19-4 first period technical fall of Amanda-Clearcreek’s Steven Fearnow at 160. “I think that’s what we expected,” said Beachwood head coach Dugan Bentley. “We …

Three Beachwood High School Wrestlers Advance to District Semifinals

All seven of Beachwood’s district qualifiers remain in contention for a bid to next weekend’s OHSAA state wrestling tournament in Columbus.

Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org: After three rounds of competition at the Division III district wrestling tournament at Garfield Heights all seven of Beachwood’s district qualifiers remain in contention for a bid to next weekend’s OHSAA state wrestling tournament in Columbus. Juniors Sammy Gross (120) and Ryan Harris (160) and senior Alex Angersola (145) won their first two bouts and will wrestle in Saturday’s semifinals. Juniors Anthony Walden (138), Andrew Kitay (152), Trevor Sanshuck (170) and Paully Flowers (195) are 1-1 in the tournament and working their way through the consolation bracket. “I’m happy with three guys in the semis,” said Beachwood head coach Dugan Bentley. “They’re all wrestling good. Beachwood High School wrestlers bring home individual titles in weekend tournament

Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org: Beachwood juniors Sammy Gross and Ryan Harris won individual titles in Saturday’s Chagrin Valley Conference wrestling tournament at Kenston High School. Beachwood finished in third place, behind back-to-back league champion Perry and Kenston. While Gross and Harris were favored to win their respective weight classes, other Bison wrestlers raised the bar in the league tournament. Beachwood High School wrestling team wins nine matches in 53-20 win

Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org Top-seeded Beachwood won nine matches, five by pin, on the way to a 53-20 win over Wellington on Wednesday in the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Division III, Region 19A state wrestling tournament quarterfinals. The Bison advanced to face No. 5 Keystone in next week’s regional semifinals at Beachwood. The Wildcats defeated No. 5 Lutheran West, 44-21, in Wednesday’s first match. “With having Martin Luther King Day and finals and not being able to conduct a practice (on Tuesday) because of the weather, everything started out rough,” said Beachwood head coach Dugan Bentley. “The team has been dealing with sickness and bumps and bruises and those things tend to have an impact on the team. Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org Beachwood juniors Sammy Gross and Ryan Harris, who also collected his 100th career victory, each won individual championships and three other Bison wrestlers placed among the top 6 to lead the team to a ninth place finish at the Olentangy Liberty High School Tournament on Saturday. “Harris and Gross were way above everybody else,” said Beachwood sixth-year head coach Dugan Bentley. “With everybody else, we’ve got some weaknesses we’ve got to work on, mostly scoring more points on the mat. We were the strongest on our feet.” Harris, third in the state in 2012 and seventh in 2011, finished 5-0 at 160 pounds. Students Recognized at Beachwood School Board

Superintendent awards wrestlers, Academic Challenge team members

Superintendent Rich Markwardt recognized several students at Monday's Board of Education meeting. Four Beachwood High School wrestlers placed at the state tournament: Sammy Gross, David Shapiro, Grant Blumenthal and Ryan Harris. Blumenthal was unable to attend the meeting. The district's Academic Challenge teams were also recognized for their first-place win on the television series last weekend, which ranks them second in the league. The team is also ranked first in Ohio and eighth in the nation in the Knowledge Master Open. According to the district website, the high school team includes Scott Remer, Lizzi Bream, James Starkman, Jay Rajan, Ryan Reilly, Rachel Zimmerman, Tigran Askaryan, Susan Eiben, Yumi Matsuyama, Anshika Niraj, Duncan …
