Bison Football Coach Steps Down

Ryan Williams led Beachwood through six seasons

Updated at 2:48 p.m. with comments from Ryan Williams. Beachwood High School football coach Ryan Williams has stepped down from his position, the district announced today. "For me, I'm just ready to explore other coaching opportunities," said Williams. He added that he will definitely coach varsity football next season, but is weighing his options of locale. Williams took the team from a 0-10 record in 2005 to its best season in 10 years this fall, finishing with a 7-3 record and narrowly missing the playoffs. He said his secret to success was a great staff. "No one person can do it on his own, especially coaching...you need to surround yourself with a lot of great people, and then when you have that, it's getting the kids to buy in. And …

Playoff Hopes For Cleveland Heights And Beachwood Rest in Court Decision: Gridiron Notebook

Cleveland Heights Tigers file temporary restraining order, both schools wait for court decision.

The Cleveland Heights Tigers football team narrowly missed the playoffs and was denied an appeal from the OHSAA, but they’re not punting on fourth-and-long. Cleveland Heights athletic director Kristin Hughes confirmed that the school filed a temporary restraining order against the OHSAA, challenging a JFK forfeit to John Adams that was not observed in the final rankings. The OHSAA denied the Tigers’ initial appeal, which caused Cleveland Heights to file the TRO. Mayfield ultimately wound up with the eighth and final playoff spot in Region 1. The Tigers appealed to the OHSAA on Sunday because it did not observe a forfeit from JFK to John Adams — a team the Cleveland Heights beat. The forfeit would improve John Adams’ record to 5-5, giving …

Beachwood Football Improves to 6-1 With 41-13 Win Over Berkshire

Bison special teams generates halftime momentum

Two special teams plays gave Beachwood High School (6-1) all the momentum going into the half and the Bison used it to chew up the clock, dominating the ball for 17:49 in the second half and sealing up a 41-13 win over Berkshire (2-5). “Those were very good momentum builders going into halftime,” Beachwood coach Ryan Williams said. “The kickoff return came off of an interception that was almost returned for a touchdown. We needed to get something going.” With Beachwood up 14-0, Berkshire quarterback Erick Burzanko hit Ben Blechschmid on a 15-yard slant route for a touchdown, cutting the Bison lead down to 14-6 and seemingly injecting new life into the Badgers. Beachwood’s Corey Jones answered on the next play with an 85-yard kickoff return…

Beachwood Football Rolls Past Richmond Heights 49-20 for Homecoming Win

Turnovers doom Spartans as Beachwood scores 35 in the first quarter

Five touchdowns, a blocked punt, a safety and two Richmond Heights fumbles led to 35 points in the first quarter alone as Beachwood eased past the Spartans 49-20 on Homecoming. The Bison continue their strong start to a promising season, improving to 3-1. “We had a lot of unforced errors that killed us in that first quarter,” Richmond Heights head coach William Cloud said. “Our kids got frustrated in the first half so we had to regroup. We reduced the errors and played strong in the second half.” Beachwood took the opening kick and immediately marched down to Richmond Heights’ 17-yard line thanks to a 12-yard run by Ari Sobel and a 26-yard pass from Alex Hohl to Howard Sobel. Howard Sobel finished the drive on a 15-yard touchdown run …

Beachwood Football Off to Strong Start With 52-7 Win Over Gilmour

Bison running attack overpowers Lancers

Beachwood High School's Ari Sobel scored the first three touchdowns of the game and the Bison cruised past Gilmour Academy 52-7 in the first game of the 2011 season. “We expect a lot from Ari,” Beachwood head coach Ryan Williams said. “When he gets through he’s too fast for guys to catch and we’re going to need that coming up this weekend.” Beachwood’s second drive set the tone of the game: heavy doses of running. They utilized eight plays — all runs — for 40 yards capped off by a five-yard touchdown from Sobel. After a quick three and out from Gilmour, Beachwood forced two more runs down the Lacers' throat before going to the play action for a 17-yard gain to Darrell Sullins that took the Bison down to Gilmour’s 20 yard line. Sobel capped…

Beachwood's Experienced Football Squad Should Challenge for CVC Crown

With 18 returning starters, Bison poised for post-season run

Last season, Beachwood High School came into the year with youth and finished second in the Chagrin Valley Conference Metro division with a 5-5 record. Now that season provides the foundation for a potential breakout 2011 campaign. Their youth turned to experience and head coach Ryan Williams expects the team to contend for the CVC title and accumulate enough computer points to qualify for a post-season bid. “We’re able to advance along at a much faster pace in practice,” Williams said. “Experience makes life easy for everybody, the team plays faster.” The Bison return nine starters on each side of the ball including Alex Hoal, who was The Plain Dealer’s pick for CVC offensive player of the year. Hoal is a three-year starter at quarterback…
