RTA Bus Driver's Disciplinary Record Includes Headphones, Minor Crash

The Greater Cleveland RTA released Artis Hughes' personnel file Thursday.

The RTA bus driver who was caught in a viral video uppercutting a passenger in Beachwood has three written disciplinary marks in his personnel file. Artis Hughes has been cited by the RTA for listening to headphones while driving twice and hitting a tree with his right-side mirror, according to documents released by the RTA Thursday. Cleveland RTA to Meet With Uppercut Driver Today

Artis Hughes will meet with administration today to discuss his employment after he was caught on video uppercutting an unruly passenger.

Artis Hughes will meet with Cleveland Regional Transit Authority administrators today to discuss the future of his employment at the company. Hughes, who drove for the RTA for 22 years before his unpaid suspension began Oct. 13 after the RTA saw the viral video online, has been charged with assault in Beachwood for the uppercut he delivered to passenger Shidea Lane Sept. 18. Despite a viral video depicting an assault on a Cleveland RTA bus last month, the company asserts that riding is safe.

The viral video depicting an argument between a Cleveland RTA driver and a passenger that culminated in the driver punching the passenger has people everywhere talking about the transit company. Tweets about the incident include people swearing they'll never ride the bus and many more people swearing that they'll never cross an RTA driver. The Cleveland RTA released some stats Tuesday to shed light on the issue. 200,000 people ride the bus every weekday. There were 71 reported assaults on drivers on RTA buses in the past five years. I have been using the RTA bus and rapid on almost 5 days of the week for the last two and a half months and I have never seen an incident that's even close to physical violence. I think it's fair to say that this is a small blip in a consistently safe track record. It's important to note that this incident was spurred by a rather aggressive rider.   more ›

Artis Hughes, a 22-year-veteran of the Cleveland RTA, has been identified as the bus driver in the video. He was suspended Oct. 11 after RTA personnel saw the video online.
