Editor's Note: This post was submitted to Beachwood Patch by BeachwoodBison.org. Visit their website for more on the Bison. The Beachwood Bison were so close to a Division III district championship last year, they could taste it. This season, Coach Jason Pecjak and company are focused on feasting on the challenge of competing for a spot in the Sweet 16 - and more. Beachwood is coming off a 14-9 campaign in 2011-2012. The Bison competed in the CVC Metro against eventual Division IV Garfield Heights District champ Richmond Heights. The competitiveness of the regular-season schedule prepared Beachwood for a run in the Division III Harvey District tournament, which resulted in a district final appearance against Chanel. Davis III adjusting to status as one area's top players
Beachwood point guard John Davis III has got a lot of nerve doffing a Pittsburgh Steelers baseball cap in the Greater Cleveland area, especially after the Browns lost to them for the 15th time in the last 16 games Thursday night. But if you look closely, the Bison and the Steelers share a similar sense of design that an initial flash of anger might obscure upon seeing the “black and gold” sported so proudly. As you might imagine, Davis has a quick explanation. “It’s just for the colors,” Davis said, “not the team.” Besides, after Beachwood (1-1, 1-0 Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division) trounced Independence (1-2, 0-1), 81-49, on Saturday night at the South Gym, a fashion faux-pas, no matter how clever or well-intentioned, is easily …

Bison running attack overpowers Lancers
Beachwood High School's Ari Sobel scored the first three touchdowns of the game and the Bison cruised past Gilmour Academy 52-7 in the first game of the 2011 season. “We expect a lot from Ari,” Beachwood head coach Ryan Williams said. “When he gets through he’s too fast for guys to catch and we’re going to need that coming up this weekend.” Beachwood’s second drive set the tone of the game: heavy doses of running. They utilized eight plays — all runs — for 40 yards capped off by a five-yard touchdown from Sobel. After a quick three and out from Gilmour, Beachwood forced two more runs down the Lacers' throat before going to the play action for a 17-yard gain to Darrell Sullins that took the Bison down to Gilmour’s 20 yard line. Sobel capped…

With 18 returning starters, Bison poised for post-season run
Last season, Beachwood High School came into the year with youth and finished second in the Chagrin Valley Conference Metro division with a 5-5 record. Now that season provides the foundation for a potential breakout 2011 campaign. Their youth turned to experience and head coach Ryan Williams expects the team to contend for the CVC title and accumulate enough computer points to qualify for a post-season bid. “We’re able to advance along at a much faster pace in practice,” Williams said. “Experience makes life easy for everybody, the team plays faster.” The Bison return nine starters on each side of the ball including Alex Hoal, who was The Plain Dealer’s pick for CVC offensive player of the year. Hoal is a three-year starter at quarterback…
