The city's economic development team will survey Israel's landscape and identify opportunities for economic development
Though Jim Doutt's presentation on building an incentive framework for businesses didn't center on Israel, the country played a large role in it. As Beachwood attempts to recruit more businesses and spur economic development, Doutt, the city's economic development director, said firms in Israel should be among the community's targets. "Israel is a logical thing for Beachwood to look at," Doutt said. "There's a long-term, longstanding, discernible cultural connection between Beachwood and Israel." Doutt said there are several biomedical companies in Israel that could deem Beachwood a good fit. His research estimates about 400 new companies in that sector between 2001 and 2011. Those firms could be intrigued by the prospect of supplying and …

The Jewish Family Service Association’s YouthAbility kids are in Israel to meet other kids and volunteer for eight days. YouthAbility supports youth with disabilities or who are at risk to develop job skills through programs and activities like Cleveland CROPS. The group left Sunday for the trip. They will visit Jewish Cleveland’s sister city Beit Shean and meet with developmentally challenged students they have video conferenced with, part of an effort to create lasting relationships with people from this city. The group will also visit Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Their volunteer work includes harvesting produce for people in need and preparing meals at a soup kitchen.

Authors talk about their new book and their experiences living and working in Jerusalem during the Palestinian uprising, which was the deadliest conflict ever between Israelis and Paletinians
When veteran journalists Jennifer Griffin and her husband Greg Myre arrived in Jerusalem in 1999, they were surprised to find how normal and calm everyday life was. But they soon discovered that another conflict between Israelis and Palestinians was brewing, which erupted in a second Intifada in the fall of 2000 that lasted for several years. Griffin and Myre recount their experiences living in and reporting on the deadliest conflict ever between Israelis and Palestinians in a recently published book, This Burning Land. Griffin worked as a foreign correspondent for Fox News and Myre was a reporter for The New York Times. The journalists shared personal accounts of what it was like raising a family and working in Jerusalem during the second…

14-year-old is connecting to his Jewishness while on a class trip to Israel this week
Age: 14 School: The Agnon School Accomplishment: David is currently in Israel with his eighth-grade class donating clothing to poor Ethiopian children who live there. Key to Awesomeness: Don’t break the Jewish chain. It’s a phrase David Kaye has heard over and over from his teacher, and it has become a mantra for the way he wants to live his life. “It means, like, make sure you stay Jewish, you stay true to yourself, and your kids, your family, are all Jewish,” he said. Jewish leaders around the world have been struggling with how to stem the shrinking Jewish population believed to be caused by assimilation and low birth rates, especially in the United States where the majority of Jews live. The number of American Jews declined by 300,000 …

The Agnon School eighth-graders to visit next week for education, to donate clothing
David Kaye is returning to Israel soon. He’ll visit friends he hasn’t seen in years, dive into the Red Sea and marvel at the skyscrapers of Tel Aviv. But what he said he’ll enjoy most is the tzedakah. The Hebrew word means “charity,” and it is the reason he is going to Israel next Wednesday with his eighth-grade class from The Agnon School. All 17 students in his class are fulfilling the school’s tzedakah social justice project by delivering clothing to the poor Ethiopian children who live in Israel. It is an annual rite of passage for the Jewish community school’s eighth-grade and senior classes. Students have gone every year for at least two decades, except for a couple when it was deemed unsafe. “When we’re giving it to them and we see …

Itamar Nurko Age: 14 School: The Agnon School Accomplishment: Itamar is about to embark on a two-week visit to Israel with his classmates, where they will donate clothing to the poor Ethiopian children living there. Key to Awesomeness: Itamar Nurko loves Israel. He’s been there several times to visit family and enjoys the beaches and what cities like Tel Aviv have to offer. But when he gets off the plane and steps into the Holy Land once again later this month, he’ll be doing something different. Itamar and his entire eighth-grade class at The Agnon School will be donating brand new clothing to the Ethiopian children living in Israel. “It puts a smile on your face,” he said, about being able to hand-deliver those clothes. The trip to …
