Yuxi Zheng organized program to help elderly with a task we probably take for granted
When one Beachwood High School senior was asked to help one elderly man with her trash, she decided to do more — turning the request into a program that provided the service to 20 of Beachwood’s elderly. It started as a simple request: an elderly member of the community asked Beachwood High School Principal Bob Hardis about getting students to help him with his trash. The cans were getting too heavy to carry from the garage to the curb by himself. Hardis passed the request along to Carole Katz, the co-advisor of the National Honor Society at the school, asking for a volunteer to help the man with his trash. Yuxi Zheng, a senior and the president of the National Honor Society, responded. The man said that he there had been a …

Cleveland pro basketball player Omri Casspi will team up with Goodman to teach kids on- and off-the-court values
Tamir Goodman admits that he expected media attention when he turned down a full scholarship to the University of Maryland in 1999 because he would not play on Shabbat. And Goodman got the attention — later named by Yahoo! News as one of the most-hyped professional athletes ever. Now, the Orthodox Jew runs a non-profit company in Beachwood that combines faith and basketball. This summer, Goodman joins forces with fellow observer and Cleveland pro basketball player Omri Casspi to run a basketball camp that stresses values like teamwork, respect and self-esteem. “Both Omri and I understand the value, the deeper meaning in basketball; how a young athlete could grow so much in their life through basketball. Basketball is the tool. Kids …

Elizabeth Schreiber's 3,300-mile ride will raise nearly $4,000.
She’s not an avid cyclist – at least not yet. But she's decided to take a 3,300-mile bicycle ride this summer to raise $6,500 for the American Lung Association. She would have some free time this summer, Elizabeth Schreiber said. And why not, right? “Getting two months off from your life is never going to happen,” she said. “Most people can’t get seven weeks off. I didn’t want August to roll around and think, I could have done that.” “That” is a pretty good-sized bike ride – in fact, it's called The Big Ride: from Seattle to Washington, DC from June 18 to Aug. 5. Local couple gives their own money - and gifts from others - to those in need, and joins the distinguished list on Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day.
Mort and Iris November’s surname graces a wing at the Cleveland Clinic, a research greenhouse at Case Western Reserve University Farm, a learning center at the East Cleveland Public Library, a lodge at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, a pavilion and garden at the Center for Families and Children, a music room at the Bellefaire Jewish Children’s Bureau as well as a half-dozen charity programs. But it’s not enough for the Novembers to give their money to help others: They are experts at convincing others to give, too — "accessories" to their own gifts. And that's why they are featured on Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day. The Beachwood couple has — literally — written the book on what they call The Fine Art of Schnorring. Mort…
