Beachwood High School girls basketball team ends season with 23-3 record; sets sights on 2014 state title.
The Beachwood High School Lady Bison basketball team had come off from a tough year when new head coach Mike Coreno started practices last fall. Many of the juniors on the team were freshmen when the school performed its best season ever in 2010-2011 under Melvin Burke, ending with a 19-5 record and advancing to the district semifinals for the first time in school history. But in May, the girls were shocked when their much-loved coach’s contract was not renewed over a team donation controversy. The 2011-2012 season saw a new coach and an 8-12 record, and then Coreno was handed the whistle to a group of talented athletes who’d seen little consistency in their high school careers. “The first couple months were crucial,” said Coreno, the team…

Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org CUYAHOGA FALLS—Beachwood’s girls’ basketball team has a lot to be proud of following its 75-48 loss to Orrville in the Division III Cuyahoga Falls Regional championship game on Saturday. The Bison, who finished the season 23-3, set a new school record for wins in a season and won the school’s first district championship game. They also finished just one win short of reaching the state Final Four. “I’m real, real proud of what the kids accomplished, but the biggest thing is that they now understand what it’s going to take if you want to get to Columbus,” said Beachwood first year head coach Mike Coreno. “We take away a great season, a record setting season at the school, but the biggest thing is that now they…

Five other Beachwood players scored as the Bison improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference. “It went good,” said Beachwood head coach Mike Coreno. “It was one of those games where we had an opportunity to get everyone in and we had balanced scoring. It was a good night.” Kaiser played one of her best games of the season. “She had a big game,” Coreno said. “She made some steals and played good defense. Saturday, December 8, 2012
Submitted by BeachwoodBison.org: Beachwood coach Mike Coreno wasn’t sure how his team would respond after its first close game of the season. It didn’t take long for him to find out as the Bison scored the first 10 points of the game and cruised to a 67-46 win over visiting Richmond Heights on Friday. The Bison (4-0, 3-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference) beat Hawken, 44-40, on Tuesday, then got off to a fast start against the Spartans and never looked back in collecting their third straight conference victory and fourth straight overall. “I’m proud of the way the kids bounced back from a close game against Hawken,” Coreno said. “You always worry about how much energy you expend in a close game and how you come out the next time. We got up…

BeachwoodBison.org recaps Tuesday's girls basketball win
Editor's Note: This post was submitted to Beachwood Patch by BeachwoodBison.org. Visit their website for more on the Bison. After cruising to its first two victories, Beachwood’s girls’ basketball team was pushed until the final whistle in a 44-40 victory over Hawken on Tuesday. The Bison (3-0, 2-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference) played without their only senior, Terrina Robinson, who sat out with an illness, and junior standout Mikah Aldridge found herself in early foul trouble. That forced head coach Mike Coreno to alter his starting lineup and rotation. “The younger kids stepped up,” Coreno said. “Little by little they seem to be getting more comfortable in the rotations.” Beachwood led 22-19 at the half and 27-26 after three quarters…
