Bison Baseball Field Fit for Use

Study concluded last year that field may not be usable this spring

Six months after a September 2011 study that concluded Beachwood High School’s was baseball field was in dire need of rest and repair, it is in great condition and in use, said school officials. The district commissioned a study last fall that concluded that the baseball field suffers from overuse and would require immediate repairs and months of rest to be ready for spring. The area with the most serious damage was the outfield of the varsity baseball field, where the football practice field overlaps. Overuse had led to divots and had prevented grass from growing in areas in this overlap. The district’s efforts combined with an unusually dry winter has left the fields in tip-top condition for spring, and the baseball teams have played on …

Beachwood Wrestling Team Opens Season in Search of Team Title at State

Four Bison win trophies at Bison Kickoff Classic

Although renovations at Beachwood High School have forced several of the South Gym’s historic athletic pictures to be removed from its walls, several that remain bear witness to the success of Bison wrestling. About seven of the school’s 14 state champions hang there now, many of them in crisp black-and-white with David Cassidy-like long hair from a past time. And while Beachwood has produced recent champions, one photo is missing – that of a state team champion. As Beachwood opened its season by hosting the Bison Kickoff Classic on Saturday, sophomores Sam Gross and Ryan Harris grappled not only with their opponents but also with that deeper historical sense of things undone. Gross (113 pounds), Harris (138), senior Aaron Friedman (120) …

Bison Varsity Baseball May Play at Fairmount Fields in 2012

Varsity field may not be repaired in time for spring season

Beachwood High School’s varsity baseball field may not be ready for play by spring. Spokesperson Doug Levin said Monday that the record rainfall this fall has prevented crews from working on the varsity field at Beachwood High School. The district commissioned a study last month that concluded that the baseball field suffers from overuse and would require immediate repairs and months of rest to be ready for spring. Varsity football practice overlaps on part of the varsity baseball field’s outfield, which has caused damage, the study reported. If the field is not ready, the team may play games at the Fairmount Early Childhood Center this spring. Levin added that the junior varsity team holds games at Fairmount now. *Editor's Note: Due to …

Kirtland Shuts Out Beachwood Girls Soccer 3-0

Depleted Bison squad musters strong defensive effort

Beachwood High School’s (2-2-0) girls soccer team was out-shot by Kirtland 34-6, yet only allowed three goals in a shutout loss on their home field Thursday. The defending Chagrin Valley Conference champions controlled most of the game as the Bison took a conservative approach with stout defense. “We set up with a defensive shape, but we had all intent on building on our scoring opportunities,” Beachwood head coach Art Skupniewicz said. “We had them in the first half.” That opportunity came five minutes into the game when freshman Lexi Stovsky passed the ball from the box to freshman Hannah Firstone the right wing. Firstone sent a great pass back towards the goal for an easy tap in by senior Rachel Zimmerman, but an off sides call negated …

Beachwood Football Off to Strong Start With 52-7 Win Over Gilmour

Bison running attack overpowers Lancers

Beachwood High School's Ari Sobel scored the first three touchdowns of the game and the Bison cruised past Gilmour Academy 52-7 in the first game of the 2011 season. “We expect a lot from Ari,” Beachwood head coach Ryan Williams said. “When he gets through he’s too fast for guys to catch and we’re going to need that coming up this weekend.” Beachwood’s second drive set the tone of the game: heavy doses of running. They utilized eight plays — all runs — for 40 yards capped off by a five-yard touchdown from Sobel. After a quick three and out from Gilmour, Beachwood forced two more runs down the Lacers' throat before going to the play action for a 17-yard gain to Darrell Sullins that took the Bison down to Gilmour’s 20 yard line. Sobel capped…
