Should Beachwood Ban Cell Phones on the Road?

City Council refers ordinance to committee

Beachwood City Council did not vote on whether to pass an ordinance that would prohibit drivers from most uses of cell phones and GPS devices at Monday's meeting. Beachwood Police Chief Mark Sechrist told Council members that the department had waited for Ohio to pass a law restricting cell phone use in the car, but the law in front of the state government now does not go far enough. The law proposed in Beachwood prohibits all cell phone use except phone calls made with hands-free headsets and GPS systems using voice commands. Council referred the ordinance to the health and public safety committee for review. Council will address the ordinance again at the next meeting.

UPDATE: Regional Emergency Services a Growing Trend

Pepper Pike City Council approves plan to move dispatch to Beachwood

We are hearing about more and more cities joining forces to cut costs on emergency services. Pepper Pike could move its emergency dispatch services to the Beachwood Police Department, said Police Chief Mark Sechrist. “The beauty of this one is that we’re going to be able to do this and maintain the same level service for everyone,” Sechrist added. Pepper Pike would cover the costs of three more dispatchers in Beachwood, and the departments would share the equipment and computers in the Beachwood dispatch center. Pepper Pike’s dispatch staff of three is not large enough to cover the phones 24/7. One city could be busy while another is quiet, Sechrist said, so by putting everyone in the same room, the cities will see better service. Mayor …

Council Grants Permission for Firing Range Proposals

Police Chief accepting proposals for a new firing range

Beachwood City Council voted to allow Police Chief Mark Sechrist to advertise for proposals for a new firing range. Sechrist expects the range, which he hopes to put in the now-vacant former Services Building behind City Hall, to cost $650,000 to $700,000 to build, according to minutes from a March 28 Safety and Public Health Committee meeting. Sechrist said the department’s firing range, located inside the police department, is outdated and small, and officers cannot be certified on their rifles there. The requirements for the proposal include that the range should meet or exceed government regulatory standards, should be completed in about six months and should be large enough for a SWAT armored  truck and police cruisers to fit inside. …
