Beachwood Schools Approves Teacher Contract

Teachers take one-year pay freeze in three-year contract.

The Beachwood Board of Education approved a three-year contract with the Beachwood Federation of Teachers at a special meeting this morning. The contract freezes teacher pay for the first year — the same freeze that administrators took this year. The collective bargaining agreement raises pay by 1.75 percent in the 2013-2014 school year and by 2 percent in 2014-2015. Throughout the three-year term of the contract, teachers will be able to change "lanes" or earn a higher salary if they obtain additional degrees and educational credit hours. "The hard work and negotiations progressed in an exemplary manner and was spirited, intense, honest, respectful and fair to all parties involved," Board President Brian Weiss said. Board of Education May Vote on Union Contract Friday

Special meeting called to vote on support staff union contract

The Beachwood City Schools Board of Education has announced a special meeting for Friday to vote on the support staff union contract if the union ratifies the agreement at their Thursday meeting. The district and the bus drivers, who, with the rest of the district's support staff,* merged with the Beachwood Federation of Teachers union, are in contract negotiations now.  The district outsourced its transportation department last year — the district’s drivers were laid off and hired by CBS — and the bus drivers filed an unfair labor practice suit because they were in the process of forming a union. Superintendent Richard Markwardt said the district made the move to save money and improve operations. Beachwood City Schools offered a …

Beachwood Teacher Pay Is Third-Highest in Ohio

Average teacher pay in the district is just over $80K

Beachwood City Schools has the third-highest average teacher salary in the state, after Orange and Solon, the Ohio Department of Education reports. Beachwood City Schools’ average teacher salary is $80,203. Solon’s is $80,400 and Orange — the highest in the state — is $81,534. The average teacher salary in Ohio is $54,000. Even before hearing that Solon and Orange’s average teacher salaries were so close to Beachwood’s, Markwardt named them as benchmarks for Beachwood City Schools. The districts’ students and residents have similar racial, income and education demographics to Beachwood, said Markwardt, which leads to “similar strengths and challenges.” The salary is high compared to the state average — which is $54,000 — because the …

What is most disturbing regarding the data is that the average Beachwood School employees compensation has increased more than 30% during the past 5 years, and is now well over $108,000. Certainly some are making more and some less, but the AVERAGE total compensation (salary and benefits) is over $108,000 per employee. I hope the School Board appreciates the state of the economy, and what is …   more ›
