New Art Exhibit Begins Sunday at Beachwood Community Center

"People, Places and Things" features four artists and more than 80 pieces

People, places and things are seen everywhere, every day, but not through the eyes of an artist. The Beachwood Community Center will change that with the opening of its latest exhibit. The "People, Places and Things" gallery kicks off Sunday with an opening reception from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the center. The exhibit runs through Jan. 26. "It's all about how they interpret different things through their artistic eyes," program coordinator Susan Gordon Merdler said. "We have a lovely array (of artwork)." The exhibit features four artists and more than 80 pieces of work composed with oil, acrylics and mixed media. The paintings are as random as the exhbit's title implies. Gordon Merdler says visitors can expect images of children, dogs, fruit, …

Photos: Red Hatters at the Beachwood Community Center

They're not too old to have fun

Back in 1997, Sue Ellen Cooper gave her friend Linda Murphy a gift. It was a red fedora and a poem entitled "Warning." The poem, by Jenny Joseph, begins: "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me..." Murphy gave a similar gift to another friend, who did the same. Within a year, 18 women wearing red hats became an impromptu social group, and the Red Hat Society was born. The mission of the group is simple: "It's for women over 50 who believe it's their time to have fun," said Lois Klein. She heads the local chapter - Red Hattitudes -  but don't call her the president. She's the "queen mum." Elaine Zimmerman isn't the chapter's treasurer; she's the "money princess." That kind of whimsy …

PHOTOS: Pirates and Princesses at Beachwood Community Center

Costumed kids filled the center Sunday for face painting, candy and other goodies

Halloween came to the Beachwood Community Center a week early, but none of the youngsters running around seemed to notice. They were captivated by the games, toys and balloons that were part of the Pirates and Princesses Halloween Party on Sunday. Many princesses were in evidence: Princess Tiana, from  Disney's "The Princess and the Frog," was there. So was Cinderella and even a butterfly fairy princess. But lots of other characters showed up as well. Megatron from the "Transformers" movie dropped in. Supergirl and Wonder Woman waited for balloon toys. There was even a dragon, but he didn't bother to roar. Do you have a great picture of your kid in costume? Patch is giving away a trip to meet Heidi Klum in our Little Pumpkin Costume …

Beachwood-bred Woldman to show with three other women artists

If you think it might be intriguing to see a painting of a promise, you should consider viewing the ethereal work of Susan Woldman. She has created 31 images, based on the book The Promise Effect that she co-authored with Josselyne Herman-Saccio, and all those paintings will be on display when the Beachwood Arts Council presents Art Effect. This exhibition will be on view at the Beachwood Community Center from November 10 through December 3, 2011 and will feature Woldman along with painters Natasha Turovsky and B. Skufca, and photographer Elisa Vietri. Woldman has a distinctive style that she describes as “colorful, mystical, and playful.” These images are giclee prints on canvas with added painting and textures, including 24-karat gold …
