Aloft Seeking Council Approval to Make Way for Restaurant

The resolution will go to Council after it was approved by Planning & Zoning Thursday.

Aloft hotel site developers will seek Beachwood City Council approval on two measures that will make way for a new restaurant next door. Beachwood Boutique Hotel, LLC., the corporation founded by Scott Berkowitz for the development of the Aloft hotel site in Beachwood's Chagrin Highlands, garnered Planning & Zoning approval to split their Chagrin Highlands site for a restaurant. Berkowitz is mum about what restaurant will be there, but he said that he is in discussion with a strong candidate. Another measure asked for a variance so that the restaurant's lot can be about 2,900 square feet smaller than what is required by Beachwood's zoning code. The measures are expected to be read to Council at their March 18 meeting. Planning member Craig…

800 full-time employees expected to be in new building by mid-Februrary

Eaton Corporation's employees will be in their new Richmond Road world headquarters by mid-February, the company said. The company is moving about 700 employees from its downtown Cleveland, Willoughby and Eastlake offices to the five-story LEED-certified building in the Chagrin Highlands. Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook The global company's presence in Beachwood is a boon for the city, said Beachwood Economic Development Director Jim Doutt, who called it the biggest economic development event of the year for all of Northeast Ohio during a meeting with council early this week. "Welcoming Eaton to Beachwood is taking a community such as ours, that is already such a great place, and is known as a great place to do business, and …

Ground Broken on Aloft Site

Construction begins on new luxury hotel in Chagrin Highlands.

Ground was broken at the Chagrin Highlands for a new luxury hotel Monday. The four-story, 135-room hotel, a property of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, LLC, is expected to open in the third quarter of 2013.  Developer Scott Berkowitz began discussions to build this hotel in Beachwood 20 months ago and called the moment when he and his partners moved dirt on the site Monday "fantastic." "I'm very proud of the effort exhibited by my entire team," he said. "Because it really does take an entire team to get this off the ground." Berkowitz first proposed the hotel at Signature Square, which is adjacent to a residential street.  Signature Square property owner The Goldberg Company pulled that proposal after outcry from residents that the …

Aloft Hotel Seeks Final P&Z Approval Tonight

The developer will present final site plans at Planning and Zoning.

Aloft Hotel will seek final approval for a 70,000-square-foot four-story hotel in the Chagrin Highlands at tonight's Planning & Zoning meeting. The hotel, operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts, will have 135 rooms, an indoor pool and a lounge.  We'll have the results from this meeting in tomorrow's newsletter. Developer Scott Berkowitz first proposed the hotel at Signature Square, which is adjacent to a residential street.  Signature Square property owner The Goldberg Companies pulled that proposal after outcry that the hotel would be disruptive to the nearby neighborhood, and some residents alleged that Council was giving the developers and property owners special treatment. Planning & Zoning will also hear final site plans for a …

Chagrin Corridor Traffic Patterns Under Study

Results will be published this summer; changes could be made to signals, Bryden/Richmond intersection

The City of Beachwood should receive the results of a Chagrin Boulevard traffic management study and a master plan this summer. The plan, contracted in mid-April at $49,500 to GPD Group, will take almost four months to complete. As one of the main points of entry to Interstate 271 from Beachwood’s office districts as well as the Heights suburbs, Chagrin Boulevard in Beachwood is one of the most congested — and most complained-about — thoroughfares on the East side. The Eaton World Headquarters, which is expected to be complete in 2013, is expected to bring 900 extra cars to Beachwood every day, according to minutes from a March Safety & Public Health Committee meeting. And the rest of the Chagrin Highlands is expected to fill up as …

Aloft Site Moves Closer to Richmond Road

Developers ask for approval on new site in Chagrin Highlands

The Beachwood Planning and Zoning Commission approved preliminary plans for an Aloft Hotel at Richmond Road and Eaton Boulevard Thursday. The 70,000-square-foot four-story hotel will be in a different spot, but still within the Chagrin Highlands. Aloft got preliminary approval for a site in the same development, further down Eaton Boulevard and closer to the site Eaton Corporation site, last month. Developer Scott Berkowitz would not say why he asked the commission to approve a new location. The hotel, operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts, will have 135 rooms, an indoor pool and a lounge.  The parcel is about half an acre larger than the first site, and the only change to the plans on the new site is that there is space noted for an …

Aloft, Four Seasons, Beachwood High School Site Plans on P&Z Agenda

Beachwood Planning & Zoning will consider new construction in Beachwood at tonight's meeting

The Beachwood Planning and Zoning Commission will consider several site plans at tonight's meeting. Beachwood City Schools will request approval for a wider driveway to Richmond Road at Beachwood High School. The district bought about an acre of land several weeks ago to widen the driveway and ease traffic. Aloft Hotel will seek the go-ahead for their plans for a hotel at Eaton Boulevard and Richmond Road. The building was approved in April for a site farther in the Chagrin Highlands, adjacent to the Eaton World Headquarters, but now, said developer Scott Berkowitz, the hotel is requesting approval on a bigger parcel. Goldberg Companies, Inc. will ask for the nod for a preliminary site plan for a fourth building at Four Seasons Apartments …
