U.S. Senator Rob Portman visited the University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood Tuesday. The senator toured its facility and met with hospital leadership and staff to discuss health-care solutions. Ahuja Offers Ancient Healing Courses

Anisha Durve's class on implementing the ancient healing science begins next week

Beachwood has one of only two medical centers in Ohio that offers instruction on practicing Ayurveda, a healing science that has been practiced in India for thousands of years. Anisha Durve brought it to Ahuja Medical Center about a year ago when University Hospitals hired her to offer Ayurveda as part of its Connor Integrative Medicine Network, according to a Plain Dealer article. In part, the science is about balancing one's mind, body and spirit with herbs, massage and nutrition. It can be used to aid anything from back pain to glaucoma. "Ayurveda and TCM represent something our ancestors have known for generations about the depth of healing, which I found missing in [American] culture, especially when it comes to chronic conditions," …

Plans on Track for UH Rehab Hospital

The $17 million hospital will open in October

Plans remain on track for the University Hospitals' latest Beachwood Hospital. In a joint venture with Nashville, Tenn.-based Centerre Healthcare Corp., UH will open an inpatient rehabilitation hospital in October at Green and Harvard Roads. It's a $17 million project and is expected to provide 150 jobs to the city. Though he hasn't heard many other details about the project, Beachwood Economic Development Director James A. Doutt is excited about UH's desire to expand. "I think it's fantastic," he said. "(UH) is a great employment base to have in your community, when you think about the services they perform and the quality of those jobs." The facility will include 40 beds on 50,000 square feet. I hope that they will be extending the sidewalks along Harvard Road there. With the new rehab center and Eaton Corporation, there will be additional people utilizing public transportation in the area and walking along Harvard.   more ›

Three Cars Stolen in Two Days in Beachwood

Police do not believe the car thefts are related

Three cars were reported stolen in two days in Beachwood. On Wednesday, Dec. 28 and Thursday, Dec. 29, cars were stolen from Ahuja Medical Center, Bally Total Fitness and Menorah Park. Police said that they do not believe the incidents are related, and no suspects have been identified. The cars had not been recovered as of Friday, Jan. 6. The cars, a truck, a 1996 Chevy Silverado and a 2007 Pontiac G5, are valued at over $20,000 in total.

New Hospital Coming to Beachwood

Inpatient rehabilitation center expected to employ 150

University Hospitals announced yesterday that it will expand its presence in Beachwood with a new rehabilitation hospital that is expected to employ about 150 people. The network will build a $17 million, 50,000 square-foot, 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility at Green and Harvard Roads. The project is scheduled to begin in October and be complete in October 2012. The project is in partnership with Nashville-based Centerre Healthcare Corporation, a national inpatient service provider. Cogdell Spencer Inc. will develop the site and Earl Swensson Associates, Inc. are the architects. Don't let 90-plus-degree days land you or your kids in the emergency room

Most of Northeast Ohio saw a break from 90-degree temperatures today, but meteorologists warn that the rest of the week will be a different story. High temperatures are expected to climb back into the 90s on Wednesday and stay through Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Ahuja Medical Center’s Division Chief of Emergency Medicine Jessica Goldstein Resnick said that Monday tied with a day during flu season for the busiest day of the year. The very old and the very young are most at risk for heat-related illnesses, she said. On hot days, many patients are treated for heat rash and dehydration, but many have chronic conditions like asthma, COPD or swelling that are intensified by the extreme heat.
