The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the checkpoint it announced earlier this week was will be in Portage County Saturday evening. The exact location of the drunken driving checkpoint will be known Saturday morning. The checkpoint is funded by federal grant funds and is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers, according to a press release from the Ravenna post. "Based on provisional data, there were 452 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 494 people were killed last year in Ohio," Lt. Laptop, iPods Taken Laptop: A woman who lives in the Deville Apartments in the 23500 block of Chagrin Boulevard told Beachwood Police Friday May 10 that her laptop computer was taken from her unlocked car. iPod: A man told police his iPod was taken from his unlocked car parked in the 21000 block of Almar in the early morning hours of Friday May 10. iPod: Another iPod and $12 was taken from a car parked in the 23900 block of Halburton Road in the early morning hours of Friday May 10. Checkbook: A woman told police somebody took her checkbook from her purse, which was in an unlocked car parked in the 21800 Halworth Road sometime late Thursday May 9 or early Friday May 10.

Middle School Harassment A Beachwood woman reported to police on May 9 that her daughter was being harassed by her Beachwood Middle School classmates. Police are investigating. Tire Failure Causes Injury Crash on I-271 A car and a truck were southbound on I-271 on May 9 just before noon when one of the car’s tires blew out. The tire problem caused the car to veer into the truck and then spin before it hit a concrete bridge barrier at South Woodland Road. The driver of the car, an 80-year-old Aurora woman, had minor injuries. The driver of the truck, a 24-year-old Norwalk man, was not hurt. The Ohio State Highway Patrol notified the public Monday alerting the public that state troopers will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint sometime this week. The county where the checkpoint will be set up will be announced the day before and the exact location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint. "If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," the patrol said in a prepared statement. Additional support for the checkpoint will be provided by local law enforcement agencies.

Lipstick Lesson in Cruelty A woman, who tried to teach a 5-year-old girl to steal lipstick from Sephora in Beachwood Place, was charged with cruelty to children, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and shoplifting. The woman was not the child's mother. A security guard at the store told police they saw the woman coaching the child to steal the lipstick. The child was returned to her mother by Beachwood Police. The Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force is offering a reward for information which would lead to the capture of fugitive Dontez White.
Dontez White is wanted by the U.S. Marshals and the Lakewood Police for drug trafficking and firearms offenses, according to Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. White, 38, has a significant criminal history, officials said, and should be considered armed and dangerous. White stands about 5’06” and weighs 400 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Police believe he hiding out somewhere in the Cleveland area. He also has previously lived near the 600 block of Willow Dr. in Euclid. Specialized rescues require special training.

Members of the Heights Area Special Rescue Team spent May 7, 8, and 9 at Lake View Cemetery's Dam in Cleveland Heights training for specialty rescues. The Heights Area Special Rescue Team has been working on their "rope rescues," said Kehn. The team is comprised of 45 firefighters from Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, University Heights, South Euclid, Euclid and Beachwood. This week's work has included specialized training in high angle rope rescues and rescues in trenches, high places, confined spaces and collapsed spaces, he said.

Retail Theft Getaway Fail A teenager was caught trying to steal a $195 Burberry dress shirt from Nordstrom in Beachwood Place on Sunday May 5 at about 5 p.m. He hid the shirt in an H&M shopping bag and tried to leave the store without paying for it. The teen was stopped by the store’s loss prevention staff, but he broke free and ran away. Police later found him at the bus stop on Cedar Road.
