Kurt Kohr: Holocaust Survivor, Independence Fighter, Business Owner, Volunteer

Services were held May 2 at Montefiore Home in Beachwood.

Kurt Kohr was a Holocaust survivor, fought in Israel's War of Independence, owned a successful business in Beachwood and was one of the founders of Kerem Maharal moshav. Kurt Kohr of Beachwood died on Tuesday, April 30. He was 87, according to his obituary published on the Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz funeral home website. Don Hisaka, Prominent Shaker Heights Architect, Dies

Don Hisaka, a prominent Cleveland architect who designed Beachwood's Signature Square, has died, a friend of his confirmed to Patch. Hisaka lived in Berkeley, Cali. when he died last week. An obituary has not been located yet, but Patch will update this article when one is published. Retired architect Jim Gibans was friends with Hisaka and worked with him on a project locally. The president of the Cleveland Artists Foundation, Gibans and his wife Nina curated an exhibit showcasing Hisaka's work at the Shaker Historical Museum that runs through March 23. She lived in the Beachwood area. She was predeceased by her husband, David Goodman. Mildred is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Goodman of Beachwood, a son, Barney (Ellen) of Vienna, VA, loving grandmother of Mark, Brian (Nicole), Josh (Maria) and Adam (Kendra) who affectionately called her Mimi, and three great grandchildren, Eva, Asher and Samuel, beloved sister of Bill Saddle. More than 30 people have signed an online guest book on Legacy.com created in the honor and memory of Brian Horwich, 25, who died in a car crash Nov. 15 in Shaker Heights. Many reflected on how his life ended much too soon. People said they loved him for his passion for life, sense of humor and kindness toward others. "Brian was truly a wonderful person, never without that signature smile and vibrant passion for life. He will be missed by all," wrote Paul Cobb. Richard "Dick" Adler Remembered at Council Meeting

Councilmen, Mayor and resident honored late Beachwood resident

Residents, councilmen and Mayor Merle Gorden honored the memory of a Beachwood resident who died last week. Richard “Dick” Adler 79, owned Adler Sporting Goods and was active in city government in Beachwood. “He was just a gem of a person,” said Councilman Fred Goodman at Monday's City Council meeting. “I will miss him. He’s just a genuine person that you don’t meet a lot in your life.” Like Adler did, resident Dick Barsen attends Council meetings regularly. “We always sat in the back row, and we had our executive meetings during your meetings,” he said to Council, “and I got to know Dick quite well.” Barsen spoke about Adler’s service in the military as a rocket scientist — literally — in New Mexico. UPDATE: Beachwood Resident, Mother Raise Over $130K for Cancer Research

Mother's bout with cancer inspired Sarah Keil Chernoff's volunteerism

In June, Morris, NJ, Patch writer Todd Cohen shared the inspiring story of Beachwood resident Sarah Keil Chernoff with Beachwood Patch. In the nine months since finding out her mother had pancreatic cancer, Chernoff, her mother Wendy Keil and other members of her family raised $130,000 through PurpleStride walks around the country to fund cancer research. On Tuesday, Wendy Keil died. However, Cohen writes, her legacy lives on. Read more at Morris Patch.
