Week in Sports: Softball Falls; Tennis, Baseball Advance in Tournament Play

Beachwood boys lead after first day of CVC Metro Division Track and Field Meet

TRACK AND FIELD

Beachwood's boys' track and field team got off on the right foot at last week's Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division Meet before poor weather postponed the second day of competition.

The Bison finished with a team total of 46 points to lead Independence (30) after day one of the division meet. The competition is scheduled to be completed Monday at Cuyahoga Heights.

Isidro Cora and Chris Lardie captured CVC titles for Beachwood as Cora won the discus with a heave of 142-6 while Lardie went 19-6 to win the long jump event. Jason Edwards placed right behind Lardie in the long jump, finishing with a leap of 19-5. The Bison also got fourth places from Marzel Atkins in the discus (125-05) and the 4x800 meter relay of Jon Rodridguez, William Wolkoff, Volodymyr Kovalenko and Isaiah Watts (8:58.10).

Beachwood's girls picked up a second place showing from the 4x800 meter relay of Julia Friedman, Rena Andrews, Torrie Sullins and Samantha Tall (10:56.70). Field event standout Olivia Mayfield posted a fourth-place finish in the high jump (4-6).

The boys' and girls' teams will compete in the district meet Thursday and Saturday at Cortland Lakeview.

BASEBALL

The Bison won three of four games, none bigger than That win sends Beachwood (12-6) into Monday afternoon's sectional final against top-seeded and state-ranked Independence. Josh Schwarz (2-2) struck out 10 to pick up the win on the mound while Andrew Somogyi had three hits and three runs batted in.

Todd Goldberg (2-1) was the winning pitcher in a 10-0 shutout of Richmond Heights. Weiss had a big day at the plate with two hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

The Bison split a pair of games with Wicklife in CVC Metro Division action. Zach Smith won for the third time in four decisions in an 11-1 triumph over the Devils. Ryan Moss and Weiss both homered while Goldberg collected two doubles, scored twice and drove home three runs. Schwarz absorbed the loss in a 5-1 setback to Wickliffe.

In addition to Monday's sectional championship contest, Beachwood is scheduled to play at Aurora Tuesday afternoon.

TENNIS

The Bison netters edged Grand River by a 3-2 count. Scoring points for Beachwood were Daniel Rodriguez (6-1, 6-0) and the doubles teams of Jacob Tepper-Alex Roth (6-2, 6-0) and Ellis Cohen-Dillon Heiser (6-0, 6-2).

Tepper and Roth advanced to the quarterfinals of the sectional tournament at Brush before falling to Gilmour by scores of 6-1, 6-1.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Bison were eliminated from the Division III sectional tournament after a 3-1 setback to Laurel. Beachwood also dropped a wild 18-17 decision to Hawken despite pounding out 13 hits on the day.
