Week in Sports: Bison Net Three Wins in Busy Baseball Week

Moss mows down batters as Bison win three of four in baseball play

BASEBALL

The Bison got a pair of standout pitching performances from Ryan Moss and won three of four games to improve to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the Chagrin Valley Conference's Metro Division.

Moss won for the third time in four decisions in a 4-3 victory over Gilmour Academy Saturday. Moss and reliever Todd Goldberg limited the Lancers to just five hits on the day while Zach Smith collected a pair of hits, scored a run and drove home a run.

Moss threw a complete game, four-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 6-1 triumph over Hawken. Jared Moss had a pair of hits and drove home two runs for Beachwood. The Bison swept the Hawks with an 8-4 win as Josh Schwarz (2-1) gained the win on the mound in addition to picking up two hits, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs.

Beachwood's lone loss of the week was a 2-1 setback to Eastlake North. Andrew Somogyi (1-1) suffered the loss for the Bison.

Beachwood hits the road to play at Wickliffe Monday and at Richmond Heights Tuesday before hosting St. Joseph in a sectional contest Thursday. The Bison will entertain Lincoln-West for a Saturday doubleheader.

TRACK AND FIELD

The boys' and girls' teams competed in the Cuyahoga Heights Relays and the Brush Invitational over the weekend. The girls were fourth at Heights, winning the 4x200 meter relay with Olivia Mayfield, Kyndal Wilson, Gabrielle Perryman and Hannah Richardson (1:57.38) and the distance medley relay with Rena Andrews, Tionne Little, Richardson and Julia Friedman (10:02.95). The boys placed fifth at Heights, getting second-place finishes from the long jump relay (56-1) and the 4x200 meter relay (1:41.84).

Beachwood's girls placed sixth as a team at Brush with the 4x200 meter relay of Mayfield, Wilson, Perryman and Richardson taking first (1:49.87). The 4x100 meter relay added a first (51.01) while Samantha Tell was second in the 800 meters (2:40.09) and Arielle Ginsburg was third in the 400 meters (1:02.45). The boys were seventh at Brush with the team's top finish a second place by Mark Blackwell in the 110 meter high hurdles (16.26).

In dual meet action, Beachwood's girls bested Painesville Harvey 53-49. First place winners were the 4x800 meter relay of Andrews, Friedman, Tall and Torrie Sullins (12:08.3); Wilson in the 100 meters (13.8); the 4x200 meter relay of Wilson, Perryman, Richardson and Ginsburg (1:52.4); Friedman in the 1600 meters (6:05.2); Ginsburg in the 800 meters (2:31.3) and the 4x400 meter relay of Mayfield, Perryman, Traci Milliner and Wilson (52.1).

The Bison boys dropped a tight one to Harvey by a 61-58 count. Ari Sobel won the 100 meters (11.1) and the 200 meters (24.1) and other Beachwood firsts came from Isidro Cora in the discus (121-7); the 4x800 meter relay of Volodymyr Kovalenko, Isaiah Watts, William Wolkoff and Jonathan Rodriguez (9:30.5); Blackwell in the 110 meter hurdles (16.0); the 4x200 meter relay of Virdell Robinson, Sobel, Chris Lardie and Jason Edwards (1:35.4) and Wolkoff in the 1600 meters (5:06.6).

Beachwood will compete in this week's Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division Meet on Tuesday and Thursday at Cuyahoga Heights.

TENNIS

The Bison netters got past Lake Ridge by a 3-2 score. Scoring points for the winners were Daniel Rodriguez (6-0, 6-0) and the doubles teams of Ellis Cohen-Dillon Heiser (6-1, 6-0) and Jacob Tepper-Alex Roth (6-0, 6-0).

Beachwood dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Akron Hoban in a contest that saw three matches go to three sets. Bison winners were Andrew Romanoff (6-2, 6-4) and Heiser (7-5, 4-6, 6-1).

Beachwood hosts Grand River tomorrow and travels to Avon Lake Tuesday before playing in the sectional tornament at Brush Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

SOFTBALL

The Bison girls lost to Hathaway Brown by an 11-1 score yesterday as they could manage just two hits.

Beachwood hits the road to play at Richmond Heights tomorrow and then takes on Laurel in a sectional tournament game Tuesday afternoon.
