Bison softball team looking to bounce back from tough start

SOFTBALL

The Lady Bison did pick up their first win of the week against Hathaway Brown, but the girls dropped to 1-9 overall on the season after losing a pair of games to Normandy during a Saturday doubleheader.

Beachwood fell to Normandy by scores of 11-1 and 10-0. In the first game, the Lady Bison trailed just 2-0 heading into the fifth inning when pitcher Melanie Small was hit in the knee with a line drive and was forced to leave the game. Small later returned to play first base in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Freshman shortstop Monique Kaiser continued her strong play this season as she recorded 11 putouts for the two games. "Monique is developing into someone who will be an all-league player for us," said head coach Erwin Hines.

If the weather cooperates, Beachwood will have a busy week ahead, playing Hawken today (away) and Tuesday (home), Richmond Heights on Wednesday (away) and Thursday (home), entertaining Cleveland JFK Friday and hosting the Beachwood Invitational Saturday. "We're looking for a big week this week," said Hines.

The Bison improved to 6-4 overall on the season after sweeping John Marshall by scores of 10-0 and 8-6 Saturday.

Zach Smith (2-1) allowed just two hits in the 10-0 win while teammate Jake Weiss collected two runs batted in and scored a run. Jeff Murtaugh (1-0) picked up the victory in the second game with Smith going two-for-four with three RBI and a run scored.

Beachwood split a pair of games with Cuyahoga Heights earlier in the week. The Bison came up with four runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-1 win over Heights as David Stern cracked a two-run double. Josh Schwarz (1-1) suffered the loss in a 6-2 setback to Heights as Beachwood could manage just two hits on the afternoon.

Due to postponements, the Bison play Hawken three times this week, at home today and Thursday and on the road Tuesday. Beachwood entertains Cardinal Wednesday, travels to Orange Friday and hosts Gilmour Saturday.
