Week in Sports: Softball Still Waiting for a Win

Bison track teams turn in top times

TRACK AND FIELD

Beachwood's boys' and girls' track and field teams both turned in fifth-place finishes at last week's Gross Invitational held at Cuyahoga Heights.

Isidro Cora and Marzel Atkins placed second and third in the boys' discus event with throws of 133-7.5 and 130-7. The Bison also finished second in the 4x200 meter relay (1:35.67) and second in the 4x100 meter relay (46.25).

Olivia Mayfield continued her standout efforts for the girls' team as she finished second in the long jump with a leap of 15-10.75. The Lady Bison also won the 4x200 meter relay with the team of Gabby Perryman, Mayfield, Arielle Ginsberg and Kyndal Wilson (1:52.53) and Perryman won the 200 meters (28.27).  Ginsberg added a runner-up finish in the 400 meters (1:04.81) and the 4x100 meter relay was second (52.81).

The track and field teams will compete at the Pymatuning Valley Laker Invitational on Saturday.

TENNIS

The Bison netters split four matches last week, defeating Normandy and Conneaut and falling to Gilmour and Hawken.

Winners in a 5-0 rout of Normandy were Ellis Cohen (6-4, 6-0), Dillon Heiser (7-5, 7-5), Lewis Rosenbaum (6-2, 6-3), and the doubles teams of Jacob Tepper-Alex Roth (6-0, 6-0) and Andrew Romanoff-Hoi Jai Han (6-0, 6-1). Scoring points for Beachwood in a 5-0 win over Conneaut were Cohen (6-2, 6-0), Romanoff (6-0, 6-1), Hersch (6-1, 6-1) and the doubles duos of Roth-Heiser (6-1, 6-0) and Rosenbaum-Han (6-0, 6-0).

Roth scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory for the Bison in a 4-1 setback to Gilmour. The doubles team of Roth-Tepper won 6-1, 6-2 in a 4-1 loss to Hawken.

Beachwood hosts Akron Hoban Wednesday and entertains Nordonia Thursday afternoon.

BASEBALL

The Bison fell to 2-3 overall on the season after losses to Independence and Shaker Heights last week.

Beachwood dropped two conference games to a strong Independence team by scores of 8-4 and 4-3. Ryan Moss (1-1) and Zach Smith (0-1) suffered the losses. The Bison fell to Shaker 11-7 with Matt Levine the losing pitcher despite a home run from Jeff Murtaugh and a pair of runs batted in by Moss.

Beachwood plays at Aurora Wednesday, returns home to host Valley Forge Thursday and is slated for a doubleheader at Cleveland Heights Saturday.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Bison are still seeking their first win of the new season after losses to Independence and Wickliffe last week.

Beachwood will look to break through into the win column at home against Richmond Heights Wednesday, at Kirtland Thursday and at home with a doubleheader against Valley Forge Saturday.
