Five Bison wrestlers stay alive at district wrestling tournament

WRESTLING

A one-day delay and some stiff competition have not deterred Beachwood's wrestling team at the Division III district tournament in Garfield Heights this weekend. The Bison still have all five of their qualifiers in the running for state qualifying berths, including three in this afternoon's  semifinals.

The tournament did not get under way until Sasturday after Friday's inclement weather. Beachwood's Sammy Gross (112 pounds), Ryan Harris (125) and Alec Jacober (130) all won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals. Aaron Friedman (119) and David Shapiro (171)  won their opening round bouts, lost in the quarterfinals and bounced back with victories in the second round of consolation  action.

Gross rolled to 12-3 and 7-1 decisions, Harris was dominant with a 17-2 technical fall and a 9-0 shutout victory and Jacober was equally impressive, posting decisions by scores of 9-1 and 14-5. Friedman escaped with an 8-6 win in the consolation round while Shapiro stayed alive with a pin at the 2:45 mark in the consolations.

"We're very pleased with three guys in the semis," said Beachwood head coach Dugan Bentley. "The delay affected every team but we're a little closer to Garfield Heights than some of the teams that had to drive almost two hours. Having to wrestle on Sunday puts our district at a disadvantage because all of the other districts are done. Sunday is an important day for technical and mental preparation for the next week."

Today's action at Garfield Heights got under way at noon and will run all day and into the evening before all qualifiers for next weekend's state tournament in Columbus are determined.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

The Bison closed out a 12-8 regular season with a 63-54 win at Cuyahoga Heights, breaking open a tight contest with a 20-11 run in the third period of play.

Jeremiah Townes led the winners with a 17-point performance while John Davis aided the cause with 16 points. Andrew Somogyi (14 points) and Ellis Cohen (11) also hit for double figures for the Bison, who finished at 10-5 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division.

Beachwood opens sectional tournament play at Lakeland Community College tomorrow night when the Bison take on Ashtabula Edgewood at 8 p.m.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The Lady Bison improved to 18-4 overall on the season with wins over Cardinal and Wickliffe in Division III sectional action at Ashtabula. The reward for those victories is a date with state-ranked Gilmour Academy in a district semifinal at 7:30 p.m Thursday.

Beachwood entered the tournament as the district's fourth-seeded team while Gilmour (20-2) got the top seed. The other two teams playing for a district final berth at Ashtabula are Berkshire and Villa Angela St. Joseph. The district title game is 1 p.m. Saturday.

Aneisha Hardin, Mikah Aldridge, Merecedes Hudson, Krystal Pearson and Monique Kaiser were all double-figure scorers for the Lady Bison in their first two tournament wins. Neither Cardinal nor Wickliffe was able to score 30 points against the Beachwood defense.

Thursday night's contest pits two of the area's top coaches against each other. Lady Bison coach Melvin Burke guided East Tech to a state title and Gilmour head coach Bob Beutel has been to the Final Four with Eastlake North.

SWIMMING

Beachwood senior Laura Tramer made her final appearance at the state swimming and diving championships in Canton. Tramer closed out her career with an 11th-place finish in the 200 freestyle event, posting a time of 1:57.02.
