Bison Wrestlers Fall at State Tournament

Harris and Jacober drop one-point decisions in quarterfinal matches

Any loss is tough to take for a high school wrestler. A one-point loss in the quarterfinals of the state championships is simply brutal.

Beachwood's Ryan Harris and Alec Jacober learned that difficult lesson earlier today at Value City Arena in Columbus as they dropped identical 3-2 decisions to fall out of the championship final bracket of the state tournament.

Harris, a freshman wrestling at 125 pounds, fell to Jared VanVleet of Edgerton for just his fifth setback in 50 matches this season. Harris is just the second freshman in Beachwood school history to win a district title.

Jacober, a senior making his second straight trip to Columbus, also fell by a single point in his 130-pound quarterfinal bout against Kyle Deeter of Covington.

Both Bison wrestlers join freshman teammate Sammy Gross (112 pounds) in the second round of consolation action this afternoon. Gross dropped his first round match Thursday by a 6-3 decision to Jacob Danishek of Dayton Christian, but came back to pin Sean Regoli of Carroll Bloom-Carroll at the 4:59 mark of their first round consolation match.

Harris and Jacober were both impressive in Thursday's first round of action in Columbus. Harris rolled to a 17-2 technical fall against Coshocton's Zack Cantrell while Jacober dominated Logan Reichert of Sandusky St. Mary by a 10-1 count.

The three Beachwood grapplers will continue in consolation bracket action this afternoon. The Division III consolation quarterfinals are set for 6:30 p.m. and Saturday's consolation semifinals begin at 10 a.m. Saturday's third-, fifth- and seventh-place bouts will begin at 11 a.m.
