Bison Baseball Notches 6-1 Win Over Hawken

Ryan and Jared Moss lead Beachwood to victory

“Awesome” is all Beachwood head coach Ben Singer said about his starter Ryan Moss’ effort on Monday. Ryan Moss threw a complete-game four-hitter and, combined with Jared Moss’ five RBIs, the Bison earned a 6-1 victory over Chagrin Valley Conference rival Hawken.

Ryan Moss only faced 25 batters, striking out eight and allowing just four hits with no walks. At one point, Ryan Moss retired 13 straight batters from the end of the first through the fifth. He took a shutout into the seventh, but Hawken tagged him with two quick hits and Sanjay Rao scored Nathan Hunt on a sacrifice fly for their only run of the game.

“[Ryan Moss] did a nice job of working the plate,” Hawken head coach Aaron Brandt said. “In hitters counts, we weren’t sitting on our own pitches; we chased his.”

Ryan Moss' pitching wasn’t the only reason the Bison won. Jared Moss came up with two big hits. The first came in the fifth inning when he sent a shot over the second baseman into right field that plated David Stern and Ryan Moss. Then in the sixth, Jared Moss hit a chopper to the second baseman who hurried a wild throw that allowed Ryan Moss, Zach Smith and Jeff Murtaugh to score.

“We shortened up on the bat and let [Hunt] supply the power,” Singer said. “We were trying to pull the ball too much with big swings at first.”

Hunt pitched well for Hawken, striking out eight through five and two-thirds. Despite allowing six runs, four of them were unearned.

“We had a couple of situations where we didn’t go to the right place,” Brandt said. “We had too many errors and that prolonged the inning.”

Hawken won’t have to wait long to seek revenge. The two are scheduled to play today and Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Beachwood. However, be sure to check highschoolsports.net for any last-minute changes in the schedule.
