Beachwood's Mayfield Places Fourth at State

Junior standout gains All-Ohio honors in long jump event

Four Beachwood girls served notice at the Division II state track and field championships held in Columbus over the weekend.

Bison coach Willie Smith took three juniors and a sophomore to the campus of Ohio State University for the biggest meet of the season. Junior standout Olivia Mayfield came up big in the long jump event, placing fourth with a leap of 17-2 to earn All-Ohio honors.

Mayfield was making her second consecutive appearance at state in the event. She placed third in the regional meet the previous week.

Mayfield joined sophomore Gabrielle Perryman and juniors Traci Milliner and Kyndal Wilson at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium as members of the 4x100-meter relay team. The Beachwood foursome ran a 50.01 in the prelims and failed to advance to the finals.

Perryman, Mayfield, Milliner and Wilson were coming off a third-place finish in the regional meet, where they set a new school record of 49.56.

"This is exciting for the future of the team," said Smith. "All four of them return next season. They set a goal to make it to state this year and they achieved that goal. They were bound and determined to compete at state."

And there is even more good news on the horizon for the Lady Bison: the middle school team recently placed third at its state meet. Hannah Kahn had the team's top finish as she placed second in the 100 meters.
