Beachwood Softball Gets First Win 5-1 Over Hathaway Brown

Lady Bison take advantage of fourth-inning miscues

Beachwood (1-4) softball earned its first win of the year on Wednesday, scoring three runs on three Hathaway Brown (1-3) errors in the fourth inning, resulting in a 5-1 victory. The Lady Bison were aggressive on the base paths all game and took advantage of a number of passed balls.

“When we put pressure on another team, usually they make mistakes,” Beachwood head coach Erwin Hines said.

Hannah Rubenstein started off the fourth inning for Beachwood by advancing to second on an overthrow from Hathaway Brown pitcher Logan Paul. A fielding error allowed Brooke Peskin to score Rubenstein, tying the game 1-1. The Lady Bison took the lead when Peskin and Carly Wohlfeiler scored two batters later on passed balls with two outs.

“We’re a young team and sometimes we get over our head a little bit,” Hathaway Brown head coach Bruno Biello said. “It got away from us. We should have got out of the inning with no runs scored.”

Beachwood added two insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The first came when Sami Jacobs rifled a single into left field that scored Amy Eisenberg. The next inning, Melanie Small ripped a shot into left that scored Wohlfeiler.

Small pitched a great game for Beachwood, throwing a complete game with no earned runs, allowing four hits, no walks and striking out seven. The one run Hathaway Brown scored came due to a pair of Beachwood errors in the first inning.

“[Small] kept us off balance the whole game. She did a really good job,” Biello said. “We didn’t put the ball in play very hard.”

The Lady Bison will try and build off of their first win. Beachwood is set to travel to Cuyahoga Heights today at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Bison return home Saturday for a doubleheader against Normandy High School, the first game slated for 11 a.m. with the second to follow at approximately 1 p.m. However, the weather is constantly changing the schedule.
