“With having Martin Luther King Day and finals and not being able to conduct a practice (on Tuesday) because of the weather, everything started out rough,” said Beachwood head coach Dugan Bentley. “The team has been dealing with sickness and bumps and bruises and those things tend to have an impact on the team. I was a little nervous but it turned out pretty well.”

Wellington’s Jacob Downs opened the dual with a 3 minute, 24 second pin over Beachwood’s Kyle Gross at 106 pounds and Zac Koubekreceived a forfeit at 113 to push the Dukes’ lead to 12-0.

Beachwood’s Jacob Markovich won by forfeit at 120 and following a double forfeit at 126, the Bison, ranked No. 10 in the latest Ohio Wrestling Coaches’ Association state poll, won the next three bouts to take a 24-12 lead.

Sammy Gross, who bumped up to 132, received a forfeit, and both Anthony Walden and Alex Angersolastuck their Wellington opponents.

Walden gave up the first takedown but recovered to lead 14-3 before flattening Alex Coker at 138 pounds in 3:42. Angersola took early control of his 145-pound bout with Alex Imhoff and ended it in 1:30.

“(Walden) has to stay on point,” Bentley said. “He has to put six minutes together and when he does that he’s tough to beat. He can be his own worst enemy when he doesn’t stay focused. Angersola has been good. He’s been making some strides.”

Wellington’s Josh Kitko snapped Beachwood’s win streak, at least temporarily, with an 8-0 major decision over Gordon Hong at 152.

Ryan Harris’ 28-second pin over Matt Kitko at 160 gave Beachwood a 30-16 lead and Trevor Sanshuckadded six more points with a 2 minute, 16 second pin over Aaron Ferguson at 172.

Sanshuck scored two takedowns, two near falls and a reversal to lead 12-1 before finishing off Ferguson.

“Trevor has a good motor,” Bentley said. “He doesn’t have a huge arsenal (of moves), but he does some things really well.”

At 182, Wellington’s Kaz Dec defeated Sam Diamond, 10-0, but the Bison won the last three bouts.

Paul Flowers pinned Jacob Squire in 2:29 at 195 and Shawn Felix (220) and Bennet Woomer (285) won by forfeit to close out the scoring.
