Support Staff Union Contract Still Pending

Board of Education meeting to vote on contract canceled after BUSS votes down proposal

The Beachwood City Schools support staff union has voted down contract proposals twice this week.

District administration and the Beachwood Union of Support Staff have been in negotiations for a contract for several weeks. Members of the BUSS, which falls under the umbrella of the Ohio Federation of Teachers, met Tuesday night and Thursday night to vote on contract proposals.

The scheduled meetings to vote on the contract for Wednesday and but cancelled each after the contract was not ratified.

Kim Luther, OFT’s field coordinator, said that the reasons for the membership voting down the proposals are unclear, but that she, BUSS leadership and district administration are working together to address concerns.

District officials are prohibited by law from commenting on union negotiations.

“I think both parties are anxious to get this done so we can get back to business,” Luther added.

She said that she hopes to take another proposal to the union membership next week.
