Senior Standouts: Lindsay Silver

The Bison corner kicker has her sights on teaching children

Lindsay Silver started playing soccer when she was 4 years old at the urging of her friend Laura Tramer and her mother Jen. Silver remembers dreading the first day, but once she got on the field the adrenaline took over.

“I wasn’t a very sporty girl at first,” Silver said. “I wore dresses every day and I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing pants. I didn’t like mud or getting dirty, but then the aggressive side of me came out and I ended up loving it.”

The Beachwood forward garnered multiple honors during her senior year: team captain, first team All CVC, first team All Greater Cleveland and All Academic CVC. However, the honor that meant the most to her was being named team MVP by her teammates.

Silver also achieved another personal goal in being the player who took the corner kicks, something she’s wanted to do since she became a Bison.

“It took a lot of practice to perfect the kick,” Silver said. “During our first playoff game, Melanie Small headed in one of my corner kicks. I was so excited, I’ll never forget that goal.”

She’s also perfected her sign language, being a member of Beachwood’s ASL club. Every year the club holds a holiday party for approximately 200 deaf guests. The students work to raise money donated from local businesses and parents. The club also coordinated a field trip to an alpaca farm with deaf elementary students. Silver knew her student was comfortable when he asked to sit on her lap on the bus ride.

“Not many people know sign language, so it’s really exciting for them when they can connect with someone who is hearing,” Silver said.

Silver will attend Miami of Ohio in the fall, where she plans to pursue a career in education, ideally kindergarten or first grade. She was considering trying out for soccer as a walk-on, but decided instead to continue soccer at the intramural and club level and pursue other interests like joining a sorority.

“There is so much college has to offer that I don’t want to stick to just one thing,” Silver said. “Miami is division one, it’s such a big time commitment that I don’t think I would have time to do much else.”
