Scott Remer is BHS's First Presidential Scholar

Senior one of 141 chosen out of over 3,000 applicants

He heads up three clubs at scored 2360 out of 2400 on his SAT and has a spot at Yale next year, and how he can add one more line to his impressive resume.

Scott Remer is the first Beachwood High School student ever chosen as one of the country’s 141 Presidential Scholars by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, a board nominiated by President Barack Obama.

He was chosen out of 3,300 students invited to apply. Beachwood High School guidance counselor Carolyn Beeler nominated him.

In his application, he chose English teacher Peter Harvan as most influential to his education. “He is an amazing teacher,” Remer said. “He really brings books to life, and his classes are really intellectually stimulating. He’s always pushing his students to go the extra mile in terms of their writing.”

The had a big impact on his education, he wrote in his application. He was asked to take a photo of something significant to him and write an essay about it.

“I’ve always loved to read so the library provided me with the tools to broaden my intellectual horizons,” he said.

All Presidential Scholars – including the only two from Ohio, Remer and – and their most influential teachers are invited to Washington, D.C. to be honored at a ceremony.

Remer is captain of Beachwood High School’s founder of the Young Democrats Club, president of the Ecology Club and part of the Chinese Culture Club. 

Oh, and he's a former Surprised?

He will attend Yale next year and is considering studying history and East Asian culture.
