Four Of Beachwood's Destination ImagiNation Teams Advance To State Tournament

Four teams from Beachwood Schools -- two each from Hilltop Elementary School and Beachwood Middle School -- have earned a spot at the statewide Destination ImagiNation Tournament, according to the district's web site.

These four teams finished in first place in their competitions for their respective age divisions at the regional tournament at Chagrin Falls High School. The state competition will be in Mount Vernon on April 20.

Eight teams from Hilltop and four more from Beachwood Middle School competed at the regional tournament. Ten of them earned fourth place or higher in their event.

Destination Imagination is an educational program in which teams of students solve open-ended challenges in discipline as far flung as theater, construction and community service. The teams then present their solutions at tournaments.

In addition to having fun, the students learn how to think critically and creatively, as well how to work in teams and resolve conflicts.

Hilltop’s fourth grade Clar-Isaacson team placed first in its “Wind Visible” challenge, in which they created kinetic art using wind energy.

The fifth grade Jung-Malul team won its “In the Zone” challenge, in which they built small vehicles using several power sources and used them to tell a story.

Beachwood Middle’s seventh grade Adelman-Rodriguez team placed first in its fine arts challenge, “In Disguise,” in which they used nonverbal theatrical techniques to tell a story about a person who uses a disguise.

Finally Beachwod Middle's eighth grade Waxman-Lenz team placed first in their challenge, a middle school level of “Wind Visible.”
