Fast Start Leads Beachwood to Win Over Spartans

Lady Bison beat Richmond Heights 67-46

Beachwood coach Mike Coreno wasn’t sure how his team would respond after its first close game of the season. It didn’t take long for him to find out as the Bison scored the first 10 points of the game and cruised to a 67-46 win over visiting Richmond Heights on Friday.

The Bison (4-0, 3-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference) beat Hawken, 44-40, on Tuesday, then got off to a fast start against the Spartans and never looked back in collecting their third straight conference victory and fourth straight overall.

“I’m proud of the way the kids bounced back from a close game against Hawken,” Coreno said. “You always worry about how much energy you expend in a close game and how you come out the next time. We got up by 15 or 20 and didn’t let up.”

With leading scorer Mikah Aldridge on the bench in early foul trouble, the Bison turned to junior Aneisha Hardin to create scoring opportunities.

She responded in a big way by scoring a game and season high 23 points. She also kept Richmond Heights standout Deja Winters in check.

“She had a big game,” Coreno said. “She did a great job of playing defense on Deja and kept her out on the perimeter.”

Winters finished with 12 points.

Beachwood led 20-8 after the first quarter and closed out the final four minutes of the first half on a 9-0 run to extend that lead to 36-16.

Aldridge returned in the second half to score 17 points and junior Monique Kaiser added 13 for the Bison.

Kaiser was solid on both ends of the court.

“(Kaiser) came up big for us,” Coreno said. “She’s doing a really nice job, quietly doing some things for us. She’s one of our leading rebounders. She’s one of those players who do things behind the scenes.”

Kyleth Spencer led Richmond Heights with 13 points and Monique Evans added 12.

Beachwood has a week off before it hosts Independence in a key CVC Metro Division showdown on Friday.
