Beachwood Schools to Save $50K Per Year on Administrator Positions

Board approves the elimination of two administrator positions, and the two positions to replace them

The Beachwood Board of Education approved saving about $50,000 a year in salary.

The positions of assistant superintendent, whose duties included both personnel and curriculum, and the technology coordinator, who headed the district’s IT staff, have been eliminated and their responsibilities re-allocated.

Now, a human resources director will handle additional staff development and evaluation responsibilities newly mandated with the passing of Ohio’s budget. The director of curriculum and technology will be in charge of the IT staff as well as curriculum duties.

Beachwood City Schools Superintendent Rich Markwardt said that the moves will save the district around $50,000 a year and create more efficiency. Both positions require more sophisticated and focused skills sets, he added.

The former technology coordinator has retired. The board approved former Hilltop third-grade teacher Kenneth Veon to take the spot at a salary of $80,000. Veon is working toward* a doctorate degree in curriculum and has a strong background in technology, Markwardt said at Monday’s meeting. He’s also served as a director of technology and curriculum at another school district.

The district is in the process of filling the director of human resources position.

Phil Wagner, who has been the district’s assistant superintendent for the past four of his seven years in the administration, has not resigned, but his position has been eliminated.

that Wagner was a finalist for – but was not awarded - a superintendent position in Twinsburg, and the district voiced support of Wagner’s effort to advance his career.

Monday night said that Wagner will still have a position at the district this school year if he wants it.

*Editor's Note: The original version of this article reported that Veon had completed his doctorate degree.
