Beachwood Girls' Soccer Blanks Cornerstone 3-0

Hannah Firestone scores two goals at a new position

girls' soccer head coach Art Skupniewicz decided to change things up a little bit against Cornerstone. He moved his freshman starting forward Lexi Stovsky to the right wing, giving the Lady Bison more speed on the outside.

But the biggest change didn’t come till early Saturday morning when he told his normal defensive midfielder, freshman Hannah Firestone, she would be playing forward. She responded by giving Beachwood a 2-0 lead in their 3-0 win Saturday.

“When I told her what we were going to do today she was a little surprised,” Skupniewicz said. “I kind of sprung it on her and for her to handle it the way she did with so little prep time is commendable.”

Firestone scored about 25 minutes into the contest. When a Cornerstone defender slid, trying to break up her control, Firestone instead maneuvered around her for a wide open shot in the upper corner.

Then with about 2:00 left, Firestone found herself in a one-on-one situation in the middle of the field and sent a perfect shot into the right corner.

“With the field being wet the girls had some trouble with stability there,” Cornerstone head coach Kirk Hedger said. "We left the middle wide open at times and that hurt us.”

Beachwood freshman Jamie Rotsky added an insurance goal with about 17 minutes to play. The Lady Bison’s freshman keeper Alex Mintz made an outstanding save five minutes later, coming out of nowhere from the opposite side of the goal and sliding across the open net, taking away what was a wide open shot.

“(Alex) is making better plays tactically,” Skupniewicz said. “She is starting to play like a true varsity keeper and she’s only getting better and better each game. I’m also starting to hear her be more vocal in the backfield.”

Cornerstone’s keeper Annaliese Dunn had her hands full today, recording 24 saves as the Lady Bison controlled the ball for most of the game. Mintz had seven saves on the day.

Next up for the Lady Bison is a road trip to Gilmour on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
