Beachwood Furious Five Places 8th at Globals

Destination Imagination gets global experience at world tournament

Destination Imagination just keeps getting better at Beachwood City Schools.

For the fourth time in five years, a but that's not the biggest news.

"We didn’t’ know how we would do – we thought maybe middle-of-the-pack – but when we saw Beachwood up there on the jumbo screen, we were all cheering and crying," said Shelly Lewis, the Destination Imagination coordinator for Beachwood Schools.

The team of five Hilltop fifth-graders – dubbed the Furious Five – placed 8th out of 44 in their division and became the first Beachwood team to make the top 10 at Globals.

The weekend was busy with competition, said Lewis, but organizers make sure the kids have a chance to interact with the competitors from around the world with a pin-trading program.

"Whenever they had an opportunity, they would stop and pin-trade, so they were talking with tons and tons of kids from all over the world," Lewis added.

"It gives them an opportunity to interact with kids from all over the world, and it gives them something special, some memorabilia from Destination Imagination."

Nationalism was a theme for the whole weekend. In opening ceremonies, each state or country entered to the tune of their anthem, carrying a flag, and then watched a laser and photo slideshow of the participants' homes.
