Beachwood City Schools May Raise Athletic Eligibility Requirements
Proposed amendments to code to be presented at tonight's meeting
The will hear a presentation outlining changes proposed to the school’s athletic eligibility requirements at tonight’s meeting.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association mandates that athletes pass five classes in the previous quarter to participate in sports. This means students can fail some classes to participate, and there is no grade point average requirement.
Beachwood City Schools plans to raise the bar, requiring that students achieve a 2.0 GPA in the preceding quarter and no failing grades, principal Bob Hardis said at the Sept. 26 meting. The proposed standards would allow athletes who raise their grades four weeks after the start of the season to participate.
