Over 10 percent of class are part of the nation's top 5 percent of students.

Beachwood High School has 14 seniors who were named National Merit Scholars for this school year.

Students qualify for this honor based on their scores on the pre-SAT.

That's over 10 percent of the class, the district points out, and the honor is bestowed to 5 percent of students nationwide.

Six of those are semifinalists, who are expected to compete with 1 percent of students nationwide for $32 million in college scholarships: Maxwell Barnett, Ilana Blumin, Wooyoung Lee, Aaron Shifrin, James Starkman and Erlein Tacastacas.

Six more are Commended Students: Elizabeth Bream, Robert Kaufman, Jake Lowenkamp, Jon Sender, Julia Winkeler and Max Yanowitz. Two are Outstanding Participants: Toni Nicholas and Nick Greene.
