Sen. Sherrod Brown, Wife Connie Schultz Called Out by Blogger for Hugging

Connie Schultz posts "gotcha" exchange from blogger looking for "an expose on journalists in the elite media who socialize with elected officials they are assigned to cover."

At a Beachwood event Monday Sen. Sherrod Brown joked about the popularity of his wife, former Plain Dealer columnist Connie Schultz.

On the East Side of Cleveland, he said, people don't greet him. They say, "Where's Connie?"

But at least one conservative blogger did not know about their marriage.

Yesterday, Schultz posted an email exchange with a blogger — whom she did not name — who said that they were working on "an expose on journalists in the elite media who socialize with elected officials they are assigned to cover."

The blogger had spotted a photo of Schultz hugging Brown and asked her to comment.

She responded:

I am surprised you did not find a photo of me kissing U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown so hard he passes out from lack of oxygen. He's really cute.

He's also my husband.

See the full exchange on Schultz's Facebook page.

The Washington Post, The Huffington Post and other national news outlets reported on the exchange this morning.

Schultz, who now lives in Avon with Brown, resigned from the newspaper in 2011, citing Brown's reelection campaign, and has written books about her husband's campaign.

James Murphy July 18, 2012 at 03:47 pm
thats not dirt digging thats just posting on what you see/hear not checking facts (both sides do it equally) romney/obama have both been accused of being felons ??? HUH
A Village Voice July 18, 2012 at 03:58 pm
Digging deep? She has always been a hack journalist and the PD is just another liberal main stream media newspaper in decline.
Debbie S. July 18, 2012 at 04:03 pm
This is a hilarious story! "Blogger" is not synonymous with "journalist".
Steve Rosen July 18, 2012 at 04:41 pm
Village Voice, The Plain Dealer endorsed President Bush. What kind of liberal position is that?
Adam C. Miller July 18, 2012 at 05:15 pm
Hahaha
joe ponikarovsky July 18, 2012 at 05:23 pm

I find the photo the most interesting. What would you say the average age and ethnicity of the group is? Anyone?
white and old.
John McMillan July 19, 2012 at 12:43 am
Why do you always ask that question regarding these photos? Are you concerned about racism or ageism? Or just too interested in both?
Paxton Crenshaw July 19, 2012 at 12:53 am
eh, considering that pvt. arnold is both white and receiving a purple heart for an act of valor which occurred 67 years ago, would you expect this crowd to be anything but "white" and "old"? seriously, jean - you keep trying and you keep failing...
Jean Williams July 19, 2012 at 01:32 am
actually paxton you failed all I did was copy the comments right from the josh mandel posts
Mary Lou Brunstetter-Reynolds 7:46 am on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 I find the photo the most interesting. What would you say the average age and ethnicity of the group is? Anyone? Paxton Crenshaw 9:40 am on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 i thought the same thing when i looked at that photo... white and old whats wrong paxton your silly comment on the mandel page are OK but not on the sherrod page .....
Paxton Crenshaw July 19, 2012 at 01:52 am
i understand what you did, jean, but see, brown's meeting was to honor an old, white military hero - hence, his audience is somewhat predetermined. mandel, however, hosted what i assume was a campaign event, one where you might expect to see supporters of all ages, different races and ethnicities. to recap - brown's audience was expected to be old and white, mandel's was not.

Jean that was BRILLIANT !!!!!!!
tom m July 19, 2012 at 02:26 am
Too funny ....lighten up paxton, and wipe that egg off your face
Paxton Crenshaw July 19, 2012 at 02:35 am
apparently being old and white isn't the only prerequisite to being a mandel fan - add mentally challenged to the list. you guys don't get it at all...
Steve Rosen July 19, 2012 at 03:41 am
Paxton, that's just uncalled for.
John McMillan July 19, 2012 at 10:16 am
I haven't seen anything "brilliant" in these comments...better look up that definition...
I.M. Wright July 19, 2012 at 11:41 am
Connie is not a journalist, she is a columnist. Big difference.
The PD is hardly "liberal." Perhaps a more appropriate name is "A Village Idiot" since you're about as big of a moron as this blogger who couldn't spend 15 seconds more doing an internet search. Oh oh -- I'm going to guess the not-ready-for-primetime hacks at Patch are going to find this "against TOS."
I.M. Wright July 19, 2012 at 11:44 am
Was this a Patch blogger?
Because that appears to be the perfect example of a good chunk of blogs that Patch allows people to write: too lazy and/or stupid to do basic research. In this case, about 15 additional seconds researching on the internet, and this conservative blogging nitwit would've found out that she's been married to him for years.

"You're stupid!"
"No, YOU'RE stupid!" -----yawn
Kim L July 19, 2012 at 12:57 pm
john you need to re-read the comment string the brilliant comment was for what jean DID not what she SAID (and you and paxton fell right into her trap)
Adam C. Miller July 19, 2012 at 04:32 pm
Sounds about right lol
ian king July 19, 2012 at 05:40 pm
Does anyone here under 40 even read the Plain Dealer? i seriously doubt it!
and if you do read it, it generally takes all of 20 minutes to get through it - not much substance here for what was once one of the grand ole ladies of american journalism. sad, but the quality of this paper has declined lock step with the decline of cleveland.
Tim Torrence July 19, 2012 at 05:52 pm
I think two reasons contribute to this decline. A) They haven't had competition since the Cleveland Press folded. B) The people who do actually hold a newspaper in their hands are quite literally dying off.

They knew a bad alternative when they saw Obama

This should be a great evening. Steve Berry, is one of the greatest authors of my decade along withRead More James Patterson. They both have done their homework in research and story-telling. I would love to listen to him, however, I will not be in the area that week. It would be wonderful if he were invited to the Heights area, either Legacy, Beachwood, Cleveland Hts., because he would bring down the house with fans. Thank you, again. Love his tales.
