Council Candidates Spent Own Money in Campaigns

spent just over $9,000 on his campaign for City Council, according to reports submitted to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

Horwitz ran alone for one of four open seats against the four-candidate ticket of sitting councilmen , , and .

Horwitz’s expenditures were all from his own pocket.

The joint ticket spent about $16,000, including $9,400 of their own money, $500 in a contribution from Mayor Merle Gorden, and $6,000 that they loaned the campaign themselves and then forgave.

Berns was the newest sitting councilman who was running. He was appointed to a seat left vacant in 2010 by the resignation of Ken Kleinman.

Though he lost his seat,

Judge K.J. Montgomery ran unopposed for reelection to Shaker Heights Municipal Court and spent only $217 on mailings. She has $6,000 in her campaign fund.

The campaign finance reports were due to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections Dec. 16 and obtained by Beachwood Patch. Once the the BOE audits the reports they will be published online.
