Census Numbers Show Little Age, Household Change in Beachwood

The number of seniors has decreased slightly but much older seniors are on the rise; younger groups show no change

Numbers newly released by the U.S. Census Bureau show a largely stagnant population in Beachwood.

the racial landscape of Beachwood is changing – in the past 10 years the city has seen a huge increase in its Asian population, an increase in its black population and a drop in its white population.

But few other changes are as apparent.

Age

The 65-and-older population has decreased by a few hundred, making up 32 percent of Beachwood’s total population in 2010 compared to 35 percent in 2000. But its 85-and-older group has grown, making up 11.6 percent of today’s population compared to 9.9 percent in 2000.

The city’s median age has increased almost one year, from 51.6 to 52.5.

The number of Beachwood residents under the age of 18 has seen no significant change – about 20 percent of the total population – and neither has young kids – both in 2000 and 2010 children under 5 made up 3.5 percent of the city’s residents.

Households

There were only 10 more households in Beachwood in 2010 than in 2000.

As in 2000, householders over 65 living alone make up a significant portion of the population, at right around 24 percent.

The number of households with children under 18 years old is only slightly more than that, at about 25 percent with no significant change from 2000.

Single-mother households are on the rise: nearly 18 percent of all households in 2010 were occupied by a mother and at least one child under 18, while in 2000 that number was 11.4 percent.

Renter-occupied households have increased by 2 percent to 38 percent.
