Beachwood Schools Hire Busing Consultant

Agreement will retain services until interim director is hired

hired a short-term transportation consultant to manage the district’s busing services while contractor CBS Transportation, Inc., is phased out this month.

The Board of Education approved the resolution at last night’s Board of Education meeting, which pays W. Keith Fletcher up to $8,520 for up to 30 days of service.

Superintendent Rich Markwardt said the district plans to hire an interim director by the end of the month, and then hire a permanent director for the 2012-2013 school year.

The district outsourced its transportation department last year — the district’s drivers were laid off and hired by CBS — and the bus drivers filed an unfair labor practice suit because they were in the process of forming a union.

Markwardt said the district made the move to save money and improve operations.

Beachwood City Schools offered a settlement, re-hiring the drivers to the district and ending the contract with CBS to manage the routes.

The district and the drivers, who merged with the Beachwood Federation of Teachers, are in negotiations now over pay and benefits. Markwardt said he hopes to put a contract before the Board of Education for a vote by the end of October.
