Beachwood seniors will have three opportunities to hit the road this summer with their neighbors.
The city has approved deposits for three recreational trips offered to senior citizens and hosted by the Community Services department. Deposits for trips to Chicago, the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake and a Mississippi River cruise total $80,000.
The city will be reimbursed for those costs once the trips are booked. Officials say the trips typically sell out quickly.
"People should know that the city does not pay for these trips," Beachwood City Councilman Melvin Jacobs said. "It's a break-even amount for the city, all these trips sell out immediately."
Beachwood City Council approved the deposits at Monday's meeting.
Here's a breakdown of the trips and costs for interested residents:Trip Date Single Occupancy Cost Double Occupancy Cost Mississippi River Cruise June 24-27 $870 $720 Chicago Trip July 22-25 $1,175 $875 Shaw Festival Trip Aug. 27-28 $495 $399
"The trips are really nice," Jacobs said. "People run to them, it's amazing."
The city said residents will receive the first opportunity to reserve spots on these trips by Feb. 22, followed by non-residents. Most trips include 50 to 60 people, Jacobs said.
"This is a great opportunity for people to go with others," he said. "They've gone to New York City, they've gone to Boston ... it's really a nice thing."
