Beachwood City Council Names Its First Vice President

Melvin Jacobs will fill the newly created position

Beachwood City Council on Monday created a new position and elected a familiar face to it.

Council named Melvin Jacobs its first-ever vice president of council, the Sun News reported. Jacobs has been a city councilman for 15 years.

Jacobs steps in for council president Saul Eisen, who has missed four meetings with an undisclosed illness.

Beachwood's city charter states that the council president must assume the mayor's duties, should he be temporarily absent or ill, but he does not say the same for the council president. With Eisen's prolonged absence, council created the position to have a backup for Mayor Merle Gorden.

The Sun report said councilman Brian Linick was the only member who voted against the measure.
