UPDATED: Gas Fire at Sherri Park is Out

UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.

The fire that broke out at Sherri Park Apartments in Lyndhurst has been extinguished.

The fire, which erupted after a landscaping vehicle hit a gas line, causing a leak, spread into all six floors of the south building.

Around 100 residents of the south building were evacuated to The Greens of Lyndhurst, a nearby assisted living facility, said Lyndhurst Mayor Joe Cicero.

He added that the building was evacuated after the gas leak started at around 12:30 p.m. but before the fire broke out. Crews shut off the gas line at 3:16 p.m., extinguishing the fire more than two hours after it started.

Personnel from more than 30 agencies, including Beachwood and as far as Kirtland and East Cleveland, responded to help put out the flames.

Cicero called the fire the largest in Lyndhurst's history.

"I'm thankful that there were no injuries and everything worked the way it should," said Cicero. "We had a plan in place."

A fire has broken out in the lot of Sherri Park Apartments in Lyndhurst, just over the Beachwood City line.

Police have evacuated homes on the south side of Kilbourne Drive, whose back yards are adjacent to the parking lot where the fire started.

Multiple crews are on the scene working to put out the fire, which has been burning strong since at least 1 p.m. The fire is slightly visible from Kilbourne Drive and flames appear to be touching one apartment building.

WEWS told us that one person was taken to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, and confirmed with Euclid Fire Department that the fire started when a worker struck a gas line.

Workers are digging farther down the block at Acacia Park and Kilbourne Drives to find the switch to turn off the gas, which has been feeding the flames.

Acacia Park and Kilbourne Drives are closed to traffic, but people evacuated from their homes have set up camp in the driveways of homes across the street to watch the flames.

"I'm staying here until the flames go out," said Michelle Ryb, who lives in one of the homes directly adjacent to the parking lot where the fire is burning.
