Bison Seek Road Win

Beachwood High School boys basketball team is 2-2 in last four games.

After starting the 2012-2013 season with six straight wins, Beachwood’s boys’ basketball team is 2-2 in its last four games.

The Bison, ranked 13th in the latest Plain Dealer Top 25, lost at home to No. 11 Richmond Heights back on January 5.

“I thought in the Richmond Heights game, the moment was a little too big for us,” said Beachwood coach Jason Pecjak. “Our guys just really haven’t experienced that type of situation. We went through it and took our hits, but we bounced back.”

The team went on to win two straight conference games, the first a 67-58 home victory over Hawken and the second a 70-48 win at Berkshire, the defending CVC Valley Division champs.

Those wins were important for the Bison, not only to keep them in the hunt for the Metro Division championship, but because the team responded to its first loss of the season, despite senior Jordan Richardson missing both games with the flu.

Richardson is second on the team with 12.6 points per game.

“Those were good wins, obviously both league wins,” Pecjak said. “In both games Jordan Richardson didn’t play, so that was big for us. Ronald Jones stepped up for us and played some quality minutes.”

Jones, a freshman, scored a season-high 14 points against Hawken and 13 against Berkshire.

Beachwood suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday, a 69-66 loss at No. 3 Lakewood St. Edward.

The Bison led by one at halftime but the Eagles rallied to take a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter.

That’s when Beachwood scoring leader John Davis III (21.0 ppg) was at his best. The junior scored a game-high 34 points.

“He was best player on floor,” Pecjak said. “(St. Edward) did everything they could but they couldn’t stop him.”

Davis, who scored 86 points in three games last week, was named Beachwood’s Bison Athlete of the Week.

Despite the loss to St. Edward, Pecjak was pleased with his team’s performance on the road in such a big game.

“The key is we came back,” he said. “We have to allow that St. Ed’s game to motivate us and to just keep working harder. We competed for 32 minutes and had a chance at the end. I think that game will help us in March.

The Bison return to action tonight at Fairport Harding in a CVC crossover game.
