Beachwood Doctors' Offices Need to Contact Patients After Fungal Meningitis Outbreak

Several Northeast Ohio doctors' offices are on a list of 64 Ohio offices and health care facilities that need to contact patients and alert them to a fungal meningitis outbreak.

Two of these offices are in Beachwood.

Those patients would have received any injectable products from New England Compounding Center (NECC) since May 2012, according to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) website. The ODH adds in a press release, "The products on the expanded list have not been linked to any illnesses, FDA is providing the information out of an abundance of caution."

“We are working with health care providers to reach out to patients, but we need two-way communication,” said Dr. Ted Wymyslo, Director at the Ohio Department of Health. “At this time, ODH does not have a count on the number of patients that received drugs in the expanded recall list. Since this investigation is changing so rapidly, it’s critical that Ohioans who received these injections or solutions be informed and watch closely for any change in how they are feeling.”

So far, nine cases of fungal meningitis have been confirmed in Ohio — in Crawford, Hamilton, Marion, Morrow and Warren counties.
