BMS Students Create, Donate Blankets for Hospitalized Children

Beachwood Middle School Student Council discussed community service projects for children, and decided to make and donate blankets for children at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

Beachwood Middle School students donated 21 blankets for sick children at University Hospitals' Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

This past fall, Beachwood Middle School Student Council officers Lexi Stovsky, Caroline Stern, Susan Eiben, Hannah Sullivan and Alex Kaufman discussed community service projects for children, and decided to make blankets for the children at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

They began by collaborating with adviser Virginia McCormac and BMS principal Linda LoGalbo, who gave them money from their Student Council funds to purchase materials at Jo-Ann Fabrics, where they saved 65% on the materials. They contacted D.O. Summers, which agreed to dry clean and bag all the blankets for the children. By donating to their community service project, D.O. Summers allowed the student council to use all of their money for materials. On Monday and Thursday mornings, the officers and representatives worked diligently to complete the 21 blankets.

On Wednesday morning, May 11, the students brought the blankets to University Hospitals where they were presented to Mrs. Calla, who is head of Volunteer Services.

“Beachwood Student Council has given a wonderful gift to families who have so many expenses,” said Mrs. Calla. “We will choose families who need them the most.”

Mrs. Calla told the officers that these children would be able to draw with markers on their blankets, and personalize them, which is something they will never forget. She anticipates that the blanket will be a treasured memory for them filled with positive feelings which will help them get well.

The Student Council officers thank everyone who collaborated with them to make this project so successful, as well as all the students who donated their time: Kyle Schlessinger, Arielle Tindel, Matthew Stovsky, Casey Blum, Claudia Gill, Abby Flowers, Anabelle Cheistwer, Katelyn Howell, Sophie Shoen, Deavon Peavy, Jessica Friedman, Alxis Rudd, Nylauna Petty, Dana Kippen, and Dar’Jon Bentley.
