Students at John Hay Early College High School Investigate Global Bioethics through Cleveland Clinic's Office of Civic Education Initiatives' Bioethics Distance Learning Program

John Hay Early College High School, along with five other regional and national schools, participated in a distance learning course on global perspectives in bioethics. Utilizing video-conferencing as a new and interactive dimension of classroom discussion, this course focused on how bioethical dilemmas are viewed and resolved across different cultures and countries, with emphasis placed on examining divergent moral codes, diverse political systems and language-based differences.

The Office of Civic Education Initiatives, through a unique collaboration with the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Case Western Reserve University and The MetroHealth System facilitated the culminating session of a series of bioethics distance learning courses. This series is designed for middle and high school students to gain experience understanding and investigating some of the 21st Century’s most predominant issues in bioethics - clinical ethics, public health ethics, research ethics, environmental ethics and pharmacy ethics. Students build upon skills and form a deeper understanding of the ethical dilemmas within our world in ways that will help prepare them to compete in a competitive global economy.
